    Hi all.
Untill recently I thought that ZV 1000 would have been the 1000th ZV plate issued.
Then someone told me that each county got a certain allocation of numbers at the start,ie say Mayo gets nos 5000 to 9000 etc
Also, Ive never seen any low numbers. Who/what has ZV 1.

I don't lie awake at night thinking about this, just curious.

    thanks

I think he meant five numbers in general ie ZV ***** which will look pretty crappy.

That's a point. I never got used to the new style plates that came in after '87.....
I only just about rem the reg of my daily driver after 7! years. Yet I rem the reg of my frst car, no prob 954 uzl. Destroyed by yours truly 23/12/93.
Also I can rem all the regos of my dad's cars frm the 70's & 80s.

Frm reading thease forums, I gather that old irish plates have quite a following.

Have a Capri GT4 in pieces in various sheds in 2 diff counties. Would have gone 2 the crusher ages ago but for the orig irish kildare reg......

Hmm,i reckon i have a GT4 too,got no documents or plates witth the shell so cant be sure.

Well they came in 3colours,white silver &red. Mine, however is in jade green! Dunno why, maybe Ford were trying to clearout some old stock or something.
Have been offered a grand for the taxbook alone, but would never personally go in for that kinda stuff at all.
The reg stays with the car no matter what!

That chart only sgows the first allocation of ZV numbers. My car is a Dublin reg and has 4 digits but they are a higher number than shown anywhere on that list.

On the subject of registration plates, is there anywhere you can get black-on-red ZV plates? All the ZV plates I've seen are white-on-black.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭shawnee

You can get these from any number plate shop. Reason you don't see them is that these numbers are regarded as non authentic and not related to the year of most of these classic and vintage cars. In order words they look terrible !:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,033 ✭✭✭Silvera

Europlates in Dublin do black-on-red plate afaik 01-8251804.
Failing that try Steve Frampton in the UK (google 'Frampton Number Plates')

Dublin is now up in the 8000's at least

I have ZV 8288 registered 2 years ago. So they must be well up now.

Nah, Dublin is only up to about 9094-ish now. Still another 900-odd left :D

(My car was registered at the beginning of October 2008 and is ZV8990)

............interesting since mine is almsot exactly 1000 behind you, again n Dublin. That's only 1000 cars since May '06.

In this climate there is probably 4 years left.

yeah, but some people go for the 67 D **** ,etc option. That would account for a few more....

I recently bought a classic which is ZV xxxxx. The ZV plates came about by lobbying by the IVVCC. They claim that in their adverts to join their group in the IVS but there is no postal address or website given:confused: I also noticed that our ZV system is similiar to an old system in California which is
2V xxxxx and a very old ZH xxxxx system in Switzerland.

............not sure I understand your point but it was via the IVVCC's lobbying to the Government that the "historic" series of ZV was introduced. Basically it was argued that new style ie 87D 123 looks out of place on an olderv car and that since various series were used up the sequence starting ZV had not been used.

    Try www.ivvcc.ie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,407 ✭✭✭G Luxel

yep, but they could have lobbied for Age-related plates instead, similiar to the UK. You can get them for 1987 onwards but the system doesnt look periodic on pre 87.

At the time there wasnt so many older cars being imported i suppose, they thought the ZV system would last years..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 207 ✭✭Dwilly

The wife's Pagoda is ZV 6800, last of the old skool Dubliners ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 132 ✭✭Camarague

I think it's time to lobby the department of transport again so that we don't have to use ZV 99999 or ZV 999999 plates

There are two many digits, which look odd (especially on the square plates) which defeats the whole purpose

    Is ZVA 999 possible?
    Or OZV 999?
    Or JZV 999
    etc
    etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

AZV*** to YZV*** were used up in Dublin in 1985,though the reverse***AZV to ***YZV hasnt been used.
There is still some other unused marks from the old system,i doubt the government would go for a change though. It was much easier to tack another number on to the existing ZVs and get way more mileage out of it for minimum effort.

Im not sure if ZVA 123, ZVB 123,ZVC 123 etc are great looking either, but they are far better and more in keeping with the original series than the ZV 12345 that we are left with now...
Anyone else have any ideas on what could be done, and who would you lobby to change the system?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,568 ✭✭✭Blue850

What about all the unused pre 87 regs for each county, could even be a little money earner(tiny actually) for the government, 50 quid for ZV 33*** or 78 G **** or 250 for 1 HZM

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,722 ✭✭✭maidhc

I'd go for keeping our heads down and not draw any attention to the fact there is no tax on cars over 30 and that we still have a rolling exemption!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 132 ✭✭Camarague

who would you lobby to change the system?

Lobbying implies that we would be asking for a huge and expensive favour.

But all we want is to add a letter to the ZV instead of a number to the end of the other numbers - easily done

If classic car clubs wrote it in their newsletters... Everybody could send Minister for Transport or whoever is in charge of registration....
    and the change could happen!

Hardly a revolution - why should there be any resistance to the change?
The laziness of anybody who has to make a minor effort is all I can think of

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

I wonder if the IVVCC have any view on this, perhaps they are already on the case.

Anyone know anyone in that club ?
