Found a car - how much to haggle and how to pay?

    Greetings all!

So, I think I just may have found the car I'm happy with and ready to purchase.

It's up in the North and I'm planning on going to view it, and hopefully buy, some day next week.

The asking price is £6995, I tried to gauge what the best price on it would be over the phone but he only said he could only knock £200 off at most, tbh, I was hoping to get a bit more off.

D'ya reckon there'll be anymore room to haggle once I get up there?

Also, what's the best way to pay.. Credit Card? Get a Bank Draft? Cash?

Whichever method would work out cheapest would be a great bonus..

Also, has anyone ever used Currency.ie? What are they like?

Any advice appreciated.. I'm new to all of this! :o

What kind of car is it?

I have never bought from the north or across the pond so im afraid i cant help you there but in todays climate id imagine you should be able to knock off a bit more than that!

Cash is the best payment method for a dealer and if you tell him you've say 6k in cash and see what he says. No harm in trying!

    Hey Marty!

Yeah, thanks for that, that's what I was thinking of doing too.. From what I've been reading and hearing it seems that car sales are poor also in the UK this year so there should be more room to haggle, though this guy says he's busier than ever atm with people from the Republic!

It's a 05 Kia Sportage, £6995 seems to be about pretty average, if a bit on the high side for it when comparing to eBay and Autotrader etc..

    I guess cash is king!

Hmmm, anyone know where best to change my money to get the best exchange rate, I gather that banks aren't great..

I done a small bit of buying accross the pond and i have a buddy that bought up the north. I always found it easier to deal in "cash" and cash only. y??

you cant be scammed with hard cash in any form.

If you offer him what you feel your comfortable with offering him (within reason) cash (show him the colour of the money) then he might just bite the hook.

    be smart and devious:

keep the big notes on top and always have ten and 5 pound notes on the bottom some NICe people will give you a 10 or 20 back for luck.

Your first offer is all money you should carry on you that way empty your pockets and say "thats my last offer because thats ALL I have."

do your your reseach i.e carzone, auto trader, Donedeal.ie.

look at what extras it has what milleage it has why its up for sale and what kind of an owner had the vehicle befoe you (family, single male or female etc.)

be carful of scammers especially if its a private sale and they dont reveal too much about themselves.

be smart remember its your money that you worked hard for.

Have the cash in your hand to pay the price you want to pay (be reasonable).

Then take approx 5-10% out of the bundle and put in another pocket.

Walk up to the dealer and hand him the bundle - tell him what you are offering after you've handed it to him.

In the current climate most dealers will find it nigh on impossible to hand back a wad of notes even if it is less than they were hoping for.

It worked for me last week.

Are you buying from a dealer or privately? I got the impression that it was a dealer.

    Main dealer or non-franchised?
    Big or small operation?

My thoughts would be that the advice above about "cash being king" etc. is a nonsense. Dealers don't care if it's by cash or draft, and if they had their choice they'd get you to do finance through them.
Big notes on top make no difference to anyone.

A small operator may be happier with cash depending on how honest they are with the revenue inspector, or depending on how their cash flow looks at the moment.

well most dealer/seller's will be willing to take something off the price. you said they were asking 6995 id say you'll be able to get it for 6500 in most cases they'll have a reserve that you can get from the asking price. its also a good idea to buy with cash in some cases because the seller knows you want to do a deal and will just want to secure the sale...

Cash worked for me bk in 2007 when I bought the current car. I had agreeded with the dealer over the phone pending inspection the price. Took £600 off the asking price. Also give 20 off towards the taxi when to get to his forecourt as it was late evening when I handed him the cash.

ya I thinks thats a sign of a good sales man with a heart when the give back a bit of luck if its only a 5 or 10 note.
