Have a look at the GRO's website, it should answer all your questions:

    Hi there,

Firstly, there's never silly questions, especially when it comes to weddings. The more you ask, the more you'll know.

Civil ceremonies are becoming much more commonplace. Pick your hotel and make sure you're happy with the venue. You'll then have to get on to the registry office for the locality and ensure that your venue is on the approved list. If not, it must be approved (for health & safety reasons, as well as ensuring that the venue is suitable i.e. in terms of dignity for the occasion).

However, if a civil ceremony has been held in the hotel before, there shouldn't be a problem. Most hotels/venues have dedicated wedding staff, so they should be able to help you out.

And has been mentioned, the GRO website is a good starting point. Give the staff for your area a call. They're generally very friendly and helpful.

Best of luck and enjoy your day.

    WW

just on the wedding outside part - I know that the registrar won't do this. They will only approve an indoor venue. But many of the hotels also have celebrants they can recommend - not really sure what the difference is, but apparently they can have a ceremony outside, and then you 'sign' the paperwork inside with the registrar???? not entirely sure, but the staff in the GRO are really helpful. I am getting married in a civil ceremony and it will be at the hotel, so I know what you are looking for when you say you don't want a 'church' person.
