Unarmed Officers foil shooting

Two unarmed Gardaí foiled an attempted gangland shooting when they tackled two men armed with a loaded revolver, it emerged today.

    22/01/2009 - 10:52:35

Garda sources said the arrests in Clonshaugh, north Dublin, were directly linked to the long-running Sheriff Street feud, which has already claimed the lives of four people in the capital.

In a separate attack, shots were fired through the front window of a home in Cabra, in the north of the city. There has been a deadly upsurge in gangland feuds in the last two weeks with four men shot dead and four others seriously injured in gun attacks.

In the latest attempted killing, gardaí believe two men were lying in wait outside the home of their intended target – whose brother was gunned down last year – when the alarm was raised. Two unarmed officers from Coolock station arrived at the address around 10.20pm last night and saw two men in a silver Audi A5, one of whom was wearing a balaclava. The driver rammed their patrol car.

A garda spokesman said the garda driver managed to block the Audi and both officers got out and smashed the driver and passenger windows of the suspects vehicle.

“At this stage they saw a firearm inside the car,” the garda spokesman said.

“They tackled the occupants and arrested one of them, an 18-year-old male.”

The second man, whose balaclava was removed during the struggle, broke free and fled into a back garden close to the scene. A short time later the 22-year-old was arrested by additional gardaí after he broke into an occupied house. Both men were being questioned at Coolock Garda Station under section 30 of the Offences Against The State Act.

A loaded revolver was recovered in the car, which will be taken away for forensic and ballistic tests.

Meanwhile, a couple in Cabra escaped without injury when a number of shots were fired through the front window and door of their home on St Attracta Road at 12.45am today. Investigating officers later discovered a silver Nissan, believed to used as the getaway car, crashed on Broombridge Road . Two 18-year-old men were arrested, one near the crash scene, and taken to Mountjoy and Bridewell garda stations.

Elsewhere, forensic examinations will be carried out on two handguns recovered by detectives investigating the fatal shooting of Steven O’Halloran outside his family home in Tallaght, south Dublin earlier this week.

One of the weapons is believed to have been used in the 20-year-old’s murder at Kilmartin Drive on shortly before midnight on Monday. In a separate investigation, two other handguns and heroin believed to be worth €87,000 were seized in Finglas, north Dublin after a gangland figure Graham McNally was shot dead near the M50/N2 interchange on Tuesday.

A garda spokesman said they were recovered on waste ground in the area yesterday as part of an organised crime investigation.

A very good result and it should not be forgotten of the bravery of those members, whether armed or unarmed. Fair play to ye, lads.

On a more sinister note, I hope would the 4 killings within 3 weeks is not a precedent set for the rest of the year. If it is the case I feel we not far from another member being shot or shot at. Stay safe out there

Now that i think about it, i was filling up with petrol in tesco in clarehall around the same time, maybe a short time later and i did notice more sirens then usual for around there. didnt see any garda cars but sure heard them.

Once again great policing by the two members, someone said to me this morning one of them was a student, is that correct?

Scott medals in order here me thinks

Ha. I havnt looked at the source, but I'm guessing this is a tabloid.
Well done to the Gardai, still managing to arrest two armed men while having already having their vehicle rammed. And one member a reserve aswell! Scott Medal in order, it could have been alot, lot worse.

begs the question though???? about the vunerability of the local plod just out and about!

saw this unfold last night, heard the sirens and looked out the window..right outside my house. Very fast response from the Gardai so fair play to them. Could have been looking at a murder scene if it was a few minutes later.

    Two charged over ramming incident
    Saturday, 24 January 2009 12:19
Two men have been charged in connection with an incident in which a Garda car was rammed by a stolen sports car in the Clonshaugh area of Dublin on Wednesday.

A firearm was also recovered at the scene.

18-year-old Gerard Byrne and 22-year-old Paul Beattie were brought before the Bridewell District Court this morning and charged with the possession of a Magnum revolver.

Gerard Byrne was charged with the use of a stolen car, while Paul Beattie was charged with the carriage of a stolen car.

Judge John Coughlan remanded both men in custody to appear at Clover Hill Court next Wednesday.

Both men were granted legal aid.

Yes and the brass will love giving it as well!

This follows on from the two lads lifted in Dublin city for armed robbery yesterday. Great work being done all round as far as I can see.

Great stuff by the Blues and just the answer to a lot of the Negative stuff doing the rounds these.
They were at bloody great risk in tackling these scumbags and could have been blown away with that Magnum.

Heard from blues supporter that these guys were on the way to nail 'The Don' so I'm just wondering who is this guy and which faction does he line up with ?

They werent naive they are well involved in a certain criminal network.

Why do you think they were mislead? And do you realise that most criminal gang leaders are in fact quite young?

Fair play to them. That takes some serious balls, respect where respect is well due.

Good job to our protectors, as well as a possible murder, there could have easily been another Donna Cleary incident if it went bad.

On a related note, it was reported in the red tabs that one of the gunmen 'soiled himself' as he thought he was been shot himself. Not such a hard man now I think.

If they are all that young and therefore it follows that they are inexperienced then it should be no problem for experienced and worldly wise police officers to outsmart them and apprehend them.

About being naive, you realize as you get older that when you look back there were times that you thought you had a lot of the answers but then it was/is just an illusion. I think everyone is surprised how often this happens in a lifetime. Believe it or not some of these scrotes have dug themselves into a hole through choice or circumstance and the only way out is death/prison as that is all they know and they do not have the capacity mental or otherwise to get themselves out even if they wanted to.

There are obviously experienced(maybe not that old) people and unfortunately clever in a bad way running these gangs or else the police would be able to defeat these gangs.
My own belief is that even the lowest rungs on the ladder should be given very long sentences with the only option of a reduction in the sentence when they give evidence/information against the greedier higher rungs.

I agree but dont look at their ages and compare them to you or I. These guys have been raised in a different way and have street smarts way beyond the average. Their occupation also doesnt start at 18 or after college. Neither were rookies in this occasion. In fact at 22 The Westies were serious criminals.

Well maybe if they worked within a system of rules and guidelines like the police must, all criminals would be locked up fast but seeing as they dont and we are bound by due proceedure, reasonable suspicion and force, etc its not a level playing field. Remember, these guys were even better armed than the Gardai they were facing.
