    hey, this had been bugging me for a while, when should the FX send and return connections on my amp be used? (ive used the FX once to connect the amp to a DI box)

    The way i set up at the moment is guitar ->tuner -> cry baby -> amp's input jack.

    I was messing with my mates amp and OD pedels a few days ago, i set it up like this:
    guitar -> tuner -> amp's input jack. amp's fx send -> OD pedel -> delay -> amp's fx return.

    is there any advantage to doing it this way?

    Thanks in advance:D

    Generally the fx loop is used for time-based effects such as delay, chorus, reverb. A lot of these just sound 'better' that way - but of course, there is no right way, and if you are getting a sound you like, go with it, no matter what the setup.

    Most people use OD pedals and wah's up front of the amp.

    Yeh.....no rules with these things....your ears make them.
    But generally, the delay and reverb should really be in the loop.....as in after the preamp. The reverb sounds shocking before the amp.

    Effects before the amp start with compressor if you have one. Then EQ's and wah. Then all overdrives/distortion and finally the modulations.....phaser, tremolo etc.

    But there are no rules with these things.....just peoples experiences and tastes.

    I prefer to put everything in FX loop and have nothing between the guitar and the input of the amp. But it all depends on the situation and how it sounds.

    FX loop breaks the signal chain between the preamp and poweramp section of your amp thats why putting a delay in front sounds naff because the delay signal then goes through the preamp section of your amp if you put it into the fx loop you are just adding the delay to your amps tone which then gets amplified by the poweramp section hope this makes sense
