I normally say not too far from Howth because no one's ever heard of where I'm from.

In your case just answer "Ireland".

I was born in Dublin, grew up in Cork and live in Dublin now.
If someone asks me where I am from I will usually just say the Sun.

Well I live in London but that doesn't stop me from being Irish.

    Sutton? :)

I'll answer the 'where are you from' question to my own adavantage. If it suits me to tell the questioneer that I'm from Finglas, or from London or from Springfield USA then thats the answer I'll give them. If it's to my advantage to tell them the truth then I'll tell them my full and complicated life history and watch their expression glaze over after my fourth or fifth city/country/continant change.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

    Baldoyle Church?

I never knew there was a different name. I just thought some of it was Baldoyle, then the other part is Sutton.

When I lived in Kerry I was always asked where I was from. Some even assumed I was Polish, Scottish or from the North. I'd say they probably never heard a Dublin accent in real life.

I hate this question. I say Cork because I've lived here so long, but then I can speak without singing, which prompts people to accuse me of not actually being from Cork, which leads to a complicated litany of where I grew up and where my parents are from to explain my accent...

I stand up tall and shout it out with pride for I love where I'm from to the deepest depths of my heart. :P

Or in other words, I couldn't give a sh*t if they know where I'm from, its if they ask for my house number I start to wonder what the fook they want it for.

That must make dealing with doctors, job interviewers, Gardai and other officials pretty interesting?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 180 ✭✭Ciaran B

Depends where the person asking the question is from. If they're from Dublin I'll say Crumlin, if they're Irish I'll say Dublin and if they're from a different country I'll say Ireland.

    Context is everything, lads.

Born in Dublin ,Live on Merseyside and dont get asked were I'm from cuz it's usually '' Ah , your Irish '' or '' from Ireland /Dublin '' .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,100 ✭✭✭Browney7

Live in Dublin now but if I don't want to talk to someone I say I'm from Limerick where I was born and reared.

They usually always take a step back and say "oh right".

    End of Conversation.

Oh God. I really hate that question.

My dad was teaching in an American university when I was born, so I was born in the US.

Then we moved to Quebec when I was 3.

Then we moved to Manitoba when I was 4.

We moved to Ontario when I was 11.

I moved to Montreal when I was 17.

And I'm in Ireland since I was 22.

So, I grew up in Manitoba really. But by now, I haven't lived there in well over a decade. So I just say I'm from Montreal, even though it's not entirely true.
