And SIMI is still at it, warning people not to buy cars from the North or Britain because there is no peace of mind....Idiots!
They obviously don't count their own members doing the same thing as being wrong.

Imported cars have risen and looks like they are paying more cash to the exchequer but the fugures were not recorded properly to differentiate.
It could not give a breakdown on how much was collected from new or used cars, but said 55,819 second-hand cars were imported last year compared with 53,156 in 2007.

The link is correct, just badly worded. "VRT takings are down on imported cars" - ALL cars in Ireland are imported, we don't make 'em.

I dare say that VRT on second-hand imports are up quite a lot, but imports of new cars are well down.

Looks like the story is generally flawed, the Independent has figures of 60,091 last year for imported secondhand.
However, more people opted to import secondhand cars in 2008, with sales up 2pc to 60,091 in the year.

The VRT take in 2008 was down from €1.4bn in 2007 to €1.1bn, according to the Revenue Commissioners.

Now lets get that €1.1bn down to €0.

    :D

Could also do without having to pump billions into the banks. I know it'll most likely never happen but sure we can only hope!

News to me. There was a queue in River House for the VRT desk this morning when I went in to sort some PAYE stuff.

The VRT figures are holding up well if you compare them to say the money coming in from housing or capital gains tax. If people were not importing 2nd hand cars the government would only be making small percentages on the profits of 2nd hand car changes in garages, new car sales are dead now everywhere, Ireland is not alone.

Meanwhile, the Port of Cork in its annual report, said the number of vehicles handled last year was down 31% to 53,000 units compared with 2007.

Interesting that the Examiner chooses not to mention that their sister company transports those vehicles.

No, not really. Without the banks society as we know it would take quite a large lurch towards collapse.

So we have another bubble in the economy that has just burst, the VRT Bubble.

If the boom was the Celtic Tiger Boom, the bust should be called the Fairy Liquid Bust for all the f*cking bubbles that are coming out of the workwork now...

:(It would be nice to reduce that 1.1bn VRT take to zero but the unfortunate thing is we would just be screwed from another direction to make up the shortfall

I find it quite funny SIMI/Goverment/Corpurate types all blame us the consumer for not willing to let our selves to be ripped off no more. This country needs a big kick up its arse.

That is what struck me as being particularly galling.
Ok for a dealer to import and sell on and make money doing so.
But if an individual dares to do the same thing it is completely different.
SIMI don't have much ammo now, blithering on about peace of mind is pretty weak talk.

"no peace of mind"......anyone take a car back to the garage where they bought to have something checked out - while still under warranty or not - they do 1 of 2 things......1) they waffle on about all sorts of ****e excuses why its not their problem & charge through the nose or 2) just tell ya to buzz off!!!

    yeah good one SIMI...

:confused:Warranty is warranty, i don't think i've ever heard of some one trying to avoidva warranty. More like the customer not knowing what their warranty entitles them to, or it's out of date.

In fairness, I think most warrantys on used cars (not manufacturers warrantys) are not held in writing and down to the word of the sales rep making a warranty claim that the dealer doesn't want to honour more difficult to claim against.

Any time i'm giving warranty i make sure the buyer knows about it. Initials signed by the buyer beside the where the warranty is stated on the order form. Although, to be honest, i don't know how other places work on that.

I've seen it a few times with new cars. Dealers will do their best to ignore the problem, or else shift blame onto manufacturer and likewise the manufacturer will tell you to deal with the garage.

As for used cars, forget it! The warranty they provide isn't worth the paper it's written on. Garages are notorious for this.

What? Garages and delighted to get warranty work from the Manufacturer as it's paid for by them not the garage:confused:

Yes, I know, but it can take weeks or even months of hassle between the main dealer and manufacturer to get the problem sorted. It's a lot of hassle.

Also, a lot of the time, a main dealer will carry out a warranty repair at a reduced labour rate out of goodwill, so I don't think they would be delighted by such work.

The way the main dealers are feeling the pinch at the moment i think they'd be delighted to do any work at all that comes their way, warranty work or not.

True I guess, but they seem to be busy selling English cars these days.;)

It's quite funny when you consider that a few posts up it is reported that the SIMI are warning Irish people not to import as they won't have peace of mind, yet main dealers are now openly selling English reg cars on their forecourts. It's outrageous- the SIMI should really be abolished.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 120 ✭✭max 73

in my expierence, they've openly said to me that some parts are manufactured from sub-standard materials & then wanted me to pay for the privilage of having them replace the part in question (ok the car is a renault but a warranty is a warranty.....)

i work for a roofing company and we have to go back & repair work if the material breaksdown or whatever the cause, we dont run away or shift the blame - why do garages do it????????????
