    Hi all,

Wondering if you could give me a hand here. When I moved to Balbriggan I picked a doctor without any research and dont have any real confidence in him/her in my few meetings subsequently. Nothing really just not exactly comfortable. I need to go again with a tricky enough problem in my lay opinion, so if any one locals could post the names of the doctors that they trust and are clearly competent in the locality, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again and thanks to boards for allowing the word of mouth.

    thanks

    Morgans

John Ferguson in the Bracken Clinic (tel: 841 6000) is a good guy.
He treated my kids when he was working in Skerries & I was more than happy with him.

    Specialises in colonoscopies apparently.

Has been heard excitedly shouting "Up the Ar**!" on occasion.

Have to agree with recommendations for Dr Patrick O'Mathuna. Breath of frest air. No need to set foot in old medical centre again.

Another one to recommend Patrick - and his clinic is growing and offering more services which is great. I find him very straight forward, but without being rude or anything. Tells you what you need to know, listens to you, and pays attention. He is very nice and I am very happy attending there.

I'll add to the multiple recommendations for Castle Mill.
Though, I did have a bad experience with the female doctor there, not as friendly and open, which is a must for me with a doctor.

Agree with above - he is very good, gives you plenty of time and information. Havent had any rare or serious complaints so I cant say for sure but he does seem to know his stuff.!

His surgery hours are good too. The old Medical centre in Clonard St was a joke with their 9-5 - not sure if they have changed since I stopped going there.

Another vote for Dr. O'Mathuna. I've always found him excellent and friendly, and willing to take the time to talk to you about your concerns. Would have no problem recommending him to anyone.

Dr O'Mathuna is so nice, he is opening up a dentists there too. I love the fact he can perform minor surgery there too. He removed a cyst from my husbands neck there, no waiting for beaumont to schedule him in.

    Really likeable guy.

Did not like the spanish female doc he had in there, had the personality of a plank of wood.

I had a bad experience with Dr Patrick but the female doctor was TERRIBLE. That said I am a pain, a total nightmare for any doctor to have to deal with , so maybe he is a saint in disguise.

I had a very bad experience with this clinic. Woman on reception is completely incompetent and put me in frustration. I asked for a stamp on the back of the photo of my 3.5 y.o son for immigration office. At the end Patrick said he doesn't want to stamp it as I was rude to his staff. Amoeba knows and can do more than she is.

Agree about Patrick but also agree about that woman in the clinic. I just rang to make an appointment and was told rudely that they were on lunch till half 2 and ring back later. I've always found her rude to other patients when I've been in the clinic and she has a habit of talking slow and loud to non english speakers.Grrrrrrrrr!

Conor or John in Bracken clinic have a great reputation and any dealings I've had with either have been excellent.

I have to delete a post here that was potentially libellous, & as a heads-up for other posters...

Do not post unsupported allegations or hearsay on this or any other thread in DCN. It could expose boards.ie & the poster to possible litigation.

    Thanks,

    HB

Not sure if you guys are talking about the same receptionist I met there recently, and had to make a phone enquiry from the following day, she was a bit brusque perhaps but very competent and definitely went out of her way to find something out from the doctor for me and call me back! I have no complaints with the practice at all. Be aware they don't accept medical cards though, that's a bit of a bummer :(

Dr. Patrick O Mathuna is an exceptional doctor who,in my experience, always has time to listen & diagnose any illness that I've had quickly & thoroughly. The guy saved me in a big way.As for the receptionists, never had a problem with them.Doctors are there to provide medical advice not stamp photos. He is a nice bloke also.

Highly recommended from me too. Used to use him when he was practising in Skerries. I have used him since he went to Balbriggan too (though thankfully only once).

As another poster pointed out, this is quite a bump up on an old thread.

Its just a pity that Dr O'Mathuna was sued for malpractice. This along with a bad experience I had of him would give me no reason at all to recommend him. Initially I too thought he was great, but soon thought different.

Failure to Diagnose in Opera Singer Case costs HSE Over 2 Million Euros
    Tuesday, 22 February, 2011

Thirty six year old Elaine Lennon was an award-winning opera singer, with a bright future ahead of her both as a singer and as a recently qualified psychologist. However, in February 2007, she started suffering headaches during the pregnancy of her daughter Claudia, and attended the accident and emergency unit of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, County Louth.
There, Mr. Justice John Quirk heard at the High Court, she was diagnosed by a medical registrar as suffering from a urinary tract infection and referred to a midwife, who assessed she was about to give birth and ordered that Elaine underwent a Caesarean section to deliver Claudia.
Claudia was born a healthy baby, but the headaches and neck stiffness continued and Elaine failed to respond to antibiotics. Doctors at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital twice queried whether a CT scan of her brain should be performed but none was done, and Elaine and her baby were discharged a week after the birth.
Had a CT scan of Elaine´s brain been carried out at the time, doctors would have noticed an abscess which later burst into the ventricles. Instead, she attended her GP´s clinic at Castle Mill Medical Centre, Balbriggan, where Dr. Patrick Mathuna administered an injection which temporarily stopped the headaches and vomiting which had developed.
Dr. Mathuna called on Elaine several days later, determined that she was suffering from post-natal depression and prescribed a sedative. Later that day, she collapsed at home and was admitted to Our Lady of Lourdes Accident and Emergency Department by ambulance. The following morning, Elaine suffered two seizures after which a CT scan was performed which revealed the extent of Elaine´s illness.
Suing the Health Service Executive and Dr. Mathuna through her father, the court heard how Elaine formerly of Newhaven Bay, Balbriggan, County Dublin, is now confined to a wheelchair and can only speak in a whisper. She also requires 24 hour care due to the doctors failing to notice her brain injury.
Approving an interim compensation settlement of 2.39 million Euros, Mr. Justice John Quirke said that, were it not for her injuries, Elaine had the potential to make a lot of money in the future. Both the HSE and Dr. Mathuna admitted liability.

Dr McGrane is my doctor, and I find him fantastic. Be prepared for a wait to see him, but the upside of that, he does spend a lot of time with you. Worth the queue IMO.
