Help me please..... Building up my new bike and just found out that my new headset doesn't fit the flipping fork. The bottom of the fork is slightly wider then the rest of the fork so my race doesn't fit..... I aren't happy.

Anyone know where I can get one buy one. My budget is 50 yoyos

Maybe stating the obvious - but the bottom of the steerer tube is supposed to be wider than the rest. Are you sure the crown race can't be tapped on? Can you measure the internal diameter of the race and the outer diameter of the steerer tube?

Yes - I think there is a possibility but rather than destroy the race I'm going to take them down to the LBS and see what they can do -- hopefully I get someone having a good day.

The headset is supposed to be correct.

    This lot sell them:

Can't comment on the quality of those particular forks but the service from the shop is good.

Thanks for the responses. It appears I don't need a new fork but I need to get my reamed to 26.4 to fit the race.

Its fun restoring / upgrading an old bike but sometimes oh so painful... No to figure out how to get my bottom bracket fitting :-)

    You're spot on.

I've changed forks before and there is a wider section at the crown of the forks that you need to seat the race on to.

It's a very tight fit but it can be tapped on *gently* but forcefully.

What I have seen suggested elsewhere is that you get a piece of plastic pipeing wider than the steerer by the smallest margin available and a few cm longer, place it over the steerer onto the race and tapping it down with a mallet/hammer. The NB thing is to fully seat the race or there could be problems down the line with the headset.

I once had difficulty assembling fork and headset on a mountain bike - a very tight fit as you describe.
The solution was to remove the paint on the steerer tube of the fork and it all went together perfectly.

Thanks again guys. Had a great day today. Went to the guys in wheelworx and they had a look and told me I needed to file the fork down to fit the race. It was simple enough I just went and bought a cheal metal file and started filing checking every 5 minutes for a good fit -- 15 minutes later a tight fit was achieved.

The other problem I had was that my campag bottom bracket cups were not fitting in correctly. It turned out that the store has sent me british bottom brackets rather than italian ones and in trying to out them in I cross threaded the bottom bracket. Wheelworx told me it would costs 15 euros to do so but they could only do it on wednesday. I picked all up and went to Cycle Superstore as I though they might have the required tool. They did and 15 minutes later my bottom bracket cups were on the bike and the thread retapped -- great bunch of guys.

So, people, this is the reason I like the local bike store, cause when you need them they are pretty helpful. :D
