Yep, unless Section 33 of the Wildlife Act has been overridden by something I don't know about, it's forbidden to shoot a protected wild bird with a rifle.

wheres the sport in that lads, iv been out shootin and seen birds sittin in a hedge but would not shoot untill dog found and put them up, pheasant is a sportin bird and the challenge is great, anyone can take a pheasant sittin, but thats not sport.

Des Crofton wrote a gem of a guide to the wildlife acts which is very useful and every shooter should have it (or similiar, not advocating his is the only guide etc etc etc)

As posted killing a pheasant or game bird with a rifle would be against the law.

Not only that, even suggesting that someone did so has been sufficient grounds for a libel suit which left someone facing damages in excess of thirty thousand pounds not too long ago.

It's not available on line as far as I know....it's a booklet explaining the Wildlife Act 1976 and the Wildlife Acts Ammendments 2000......well worth purchasing.....no price on NARGC site but I think it was about €9 when I bought it 2 years ago.
