Rent Allowance - Can I apply

    Hello,

I was recently made redundant. I live in Dublin, pay €900 a month for my flat. Im on job seekers payments, get €204 a week.

From what I can make out, I can't apply because of the amount of my rent. Though ive heard some can get the allowance and make up the rest themselves, any truth to this? I have about €4000 saved but that will run out over the next few months.

I didn't want to go to the Welfare Officer and be told no and then come back a week later to say my girlfriend is now living with me and apply again. But it's likely that she is going to move in over the next month. If she does and we split the rent can I apply then?

She doesnt have a full time job, works 3 days a week, the only thing is is that she gets paid in cash which shes happy with, so supplying her PPS no may raise a problem. Also do they expect bank statements from girlfriends? She's a bit concerned about someone looking into her accounts, she works with a lovely family, babysitting mainly. She's Spanish and obviously has no PPS number but the Spanish equivalent, I see theres a space for international numbers on the application form. The Citizens information bureau quotes €800 max for a couple sharing, which rules me out but those numbers seem to change everyplace I inquire.

Im just trying to figure out whats the best approach, I don't want to have to move out, its a nice place, and has been my home for the last 5 years.

From what I can make out, I can't apply due to the scale of my rent but for a couple it doesn't really get much cheaper in Dublin.

    Thanks for any help.

    CK

First thing you need to do is apply for social housing at your local county council because you can only claim rent allowance if you are on a housing list.

After that you need to contact your local community welfare officer to see what your entitlements are. They will take into account how much both of you are earning and will assess it on that.
