Avi's not working!

There are a few threads out there at the moment, which I have looked through, but I couldn't find anything that works well and is fast!

Basically, I play Avi's on my PS3 all the time, but some just won't play at all. I'm looking for a converter that will convert these files so that I can play them.

I've tried PS3 Video 9 (I think), but I found it very slow so I just quit the conversion. Also, a program where I could queue up multiple files would be great! Thanks in advance,

    Jay

Sorry to get picky but AVI is just the file name. You haven't said what encoder format the files you are trying to play are?
Are they Divx3, Divx5 or Xvid format?

PS3 will only play DivX files or XviD files not encoded with custom Xvid options (DivX compatible)

You can download a program called gSpot to tell you what video, sound options are in your files.

I have been luck so far then. Every .avi I have downloaded has worked.

I better make not in the future though.

Fair enough, but if they don't play does it really matter? I mean what I'm looking for is a program to convert from .avi (no matter what the encoding is) to a .avi encoding that will play on the PS3!

well on those occasions that the avi file deosn't play because of encoding I find that I can just encode to mp4 with a good tool from winnydows.com.

Far from ideal but it works.

This thread just down the page seems to have some good advice and links...

That's an option, it doesn't necessarily have to have a .avi (whatever encoding) output, but it would preferably be quite quick! What kind of time would it take to convert a (700mb) file?

Most of that page seems to be converting from mkv (HD files) files, which isn't what I'm looking for. Thanks though!

Have you tried to stream using TVersity. When you install TVersity on your PC it offers the option to install a codec pack (these codecs will be used to transcode). You can then set options in TVersity to trancode when required.

I have never tried it as I use the same sources for all my downloads (trusted, reputable, will always work on the PS3), but from other accounts it seems to work.

    NOTES:
if you have other codec packs installed it's not recommended to install the TVersity ones.
Obviously you need a wired or wireless network in your gaff to make media streaming to the PS3 possible

    Hope this helps...

I might look into it, but all my files are on the PS. I tried this before (not sure if it was Tversity, but it didn't work too well, that was ages ago though, but wouldn't that just double your download amount (UPC don't enforce their cap, but they might start at some point).

There's no additional download because it's in a local network. You are just send a file across a wire (or wirelessly) from one device to another. There is no internet connection required for streaming from your PC to another.

Streaming also works well (at least for me) for 2 reasons:

    1. All files are downloaded on my PC, and I don't have to transfer them to the playstation
    2. Streaming gets passed the 4Gb file size restrictions (although in saying that you won't find too many avi s that are >4Gb)

Just to know, what are these avis? Downloaded TV shows and movies via Bittorrent? In that case, maybe you're just getting them from the wrong source...

I had the same problem a week ago. Got step brothers from pirate bay torrent and it wouldn't play on teh ps3 (unsupported format), played fine on my PC though. Looked at the resolution of the movie and it seemed to be bigger than the usual for avi's. I've only seen this problem in 1 of 100 movies so far...

There are certain release groups that release content that will always play on the PS3 (most of the time it will say so in the torrent description). Typically they are:

Movies: KingBen (mp4 files which are typically better than avi), FLAWL3SS, DIAMOND, PUKKA, DEVISE, SEPTIC
TV Shows: EZTV (without doubt the best), aitb

What I would recommend is search for the name of a movie you like and also put 264 in the search thread (e.g. Step Brothers 264). That will show you those movies that have been encoded with the x264 codec (superior to Xvid & DivX), and will wither be in an mp4 container (as opposed to avi) or will be an mkv. If it is mp4 it will play straight away on the PS3. If it is an mkv, you can use mkv2vob, which converts mkv to m2ts files (without re-encoding - so about 30 seconds total time), which also play on the PS3.

Had the same problem with Step Brothers, tried it from a few different sources including Diamond. It was XviD also.

if you are looking into streaming dont mind that tversity, its extremely hit and miss, use google code ps3mediaserver, works straight outta the box, no messing, its simply the easiest and imo the best there is, free aswell http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/

note: doesnt work if you gone through pppoe to get nat 1, with eircom router, as upnp is disabled

Winavi Video converter 9 is what I use to encode avis that wont play.

Converts in a couple of minutes and has a presets that work great with ps3.

Gotta say, I've tried that PS3 Media Server and wasn't much of a fan... Maybe you're relating to transcoding, which I have turned off on TVersity anyway, as I generally know where to source files that will play on the PS3 without transcoding.

Anyway, each to their own I suppose.
