Something I have been meaning to ask, but am too lazy to google...

What is the purpose and function of the grey insert in the middle of cleats?

Not sure. One thing though is while the new rubberised Keo cleats are great for walking around in, they squeak like hell on the bike. I had to grease mine last week.

I thought they grey insert in the middle was to indicate when the cleat was worn?

The memory clip protrudes the inside of the cleat and moulds to the hollow strip in the middle of the sole at the ball of the foot. Humm not sure I'm explaining myself well.

So it's just a retaining mechanism for the memory clip?

Not sure how it works, but this seems to hint that it is shoe dependent.

It is shoe dependant, your shoe has to have a 4th bolt hole which you then screw the memory piece in the middle into. The grey bit in the picture is only the cover, when changing your cleats the memory piece stays on the shoe and you pop the new cleats over the memory piece therefore lining them up exactly the way you had them!

The mystery is solved. Thanks guys :)
