In Tiger you used to be able to show the date in a floating window. Seems this feature was removed in Leopard. There's probably a third-party app that can do it. Surely it's just as easy to bring up Dashboard and glance at the Calender widget? Only takes a click.

You can install iStat Menus to add pretty much anything to your menu bar (CPU usage, memory, etc), including date and time in a variety of formats:

The funny thing is, from another thread you posted, I think you already have installed but didn't know what it is :). If you have it installed, you'll have an "iStat Menus" entry in System Preferences, under the "Other" section and you can configure what shows.

Well you could use the iStat menu options to monitor CPU and memory usage (which is what I do) - if the Mac starts beachballing, clicking the CPU or memory icons respectively will show you the main resource hogs currently running and you can also launch Activity Monitor from there - that could help you track down what may be going on.

    Have iCal open on login.

    It displays the date.

Keep iCal in your dock and it displays the date permanently in a sexy, giant Icon that changes every day.
