Reading Floppy disks on OSX

Howdy all, I'm trying to get OSX to read floppy disks from an external USB hard drive but the disks don't seem to mount at all. Any suggestions or pointers that might help fix this? There's power at least getting to the drive so I'm not sure where the problem is, although I know floppies are incredibly frustrating to work…

Howdy all,

I'm trying to get OSX to read floppy disks from an external USB hard drive but the disks don't seem to mount at all. Any suggestions or pointers that might help fix this?

There's power at least getting to the drive so I'm not sure where the problem is, although I know floppies are incredibly frustrating to work with from experience on windows machines. The disks themselves were apparently formatted on a mac, but an old one so I'm thinking OS8 or OS9.
