Can a sports club be sued by its members?

If a member of a sports club is injured while on the premises of the club, can he/she sue the club, if the member is not participating in any sport at the time? (E.g. trips over something while walking etc.)

I know principles of negligence would come into play (:p) if liability is to be imposed, but is there any truth to the notion that members cannot sue the club as it would be the equivalent of them suing themselves... member=club....

I'm thinking that the notion is an urban legend but my poor tired brain won't give me a straight answer so it'd be great to hear the views of mightier brains.
