    Hi All.

Just wondering if there is a free software out there that will let you select programs that are not allow run with out a password or something like that.

My Uncle doesnt want his kids messing with his work software when using the home PC.

    Any ideas would be great,

(and different user accounts wont work this time around)

Assuming the computer is running Windows, what specific version of Windows is it running?

    It's XP

This is what different user accounts were designed for.

But to answer the question, encrypt the .exe for whatever program he wants to protect using something like AxCrypt.

Each time he wants to run it he'll have to unencrypt the .exe, then re-encrypt when he's done.

All this could be automated with a script/macro program, and there are paid solutions for password protecting programs which do essentially the same thing, but seriously, this is what different user accounts were designed for.

Children Control 1.7 allows you to control access to PC, Internet sites, programs and system functions. This handy and powerful tool is a choise #1 for parents who don't want wheir children play for hours in games, navigate on bad sites, launch unallowed programs or simply crash an operating system. This program may become invisible and may be protected by your password so nobody else can't change the settings.

I never used their stuff so can't vouch for it. Notice the spelling mistakes above, bad job.

There is no reason why user accounts won't work for this. Its just a case of setting permissions on his files and the files belonging to the program in question to have access for his account only. Give the kids a limited account so they won't be able to do any damage.

EFS is built into XP so no need for that

setting permissions on the relavant program file folders should block most access

if they have physical access to the machine then should use system restore often to get back to where he needs to be ofter

    advanced topic
if they are just browsing then look at a KIOSK mode for their logon or a Virtual machine or sandbox to limit the damage
