If your course was anything like most design type courses, no matter how good it was you still have a lot to learn. You should get work experience before you even think about going independent. I know it sounds a bit harsh, but if you cannot figure out how to register yourself and sort your taxes, then you are not ready to be freelance. Get yourself any sort of job if you cannot get work experience in your subject, and put out feelers to find freebies you can do in your spare time to get experience and references.
    Good luck!

I did get some work experience and I am completely aware of the fact that I still have a lot to learn ! I am just trying to get some info for the future.
My question about registering and taxes is because I'm French. I know how it works in France but I am not sure about how it is in Ireland.

ok, well the easiest way to find out about tax requirements is to go to your local tax office. I have always found them very helpful and willing to help you get all your entitlements.
You need not be concerned about VAT in the early stages unless you want to be able to claim for purchases, but on the whole its not worth it until you get to the cut off (somewhere around €20k, not sure of the current figure, again Tax office will have information).
Mostly there is no obligation to register with a professional organisation. You are supposed to register as a business, and since you are French there may be some very minor hassle about it, but not a serious problem. These are a couple of helpful websites

It is admirable if you contact boutiques personally and be in touch of contact person :)

I am contacting designers and magazines for work experience. CV sent, I give them a call but it is difficult to get to talk to the person in charge ! and it is difficult with the economy nowadays, even though I'm looking for work experience to learn more and observe. Keep trying anyway !^^
