    Hi,

Newbie question - will DTT be encrypted so that Boxer will have the market sown up? Am thinking of getting a DTT / SAT HD box and am wondering if come the Autumn the current test DTT signals will become encrypted for Boxer boxes and my purchase will be wasted..

    Thanks

Only the channels which Boxer runs will be encrypted, and they aren't being broadcast at the moment. The channels which are part of the current test, which have nothing to do with Boxer, will remain free and open.

RTÉ One, Two, TV3, TG4 will be free. Oireachteas TV, RTÉ Three and the proposed film channel will also be free if they ever launch.

If that SAT/Combo box has a CI slot that supports Viaccess (which Boxer use as their encryption sys in Sweden) then that could be future proof enough.....

According to recent media reports, see wikipedia link on it, Oireachtas TV is being shelved. So that's 1 less free channel. That is a pity but you know is politicians showing they're also cutting back. But you know its a mistake if not replaced with RTÉ News Now as its needed for citizens to be able to know what's going on politically and for such things like the Lisbon Treaty can have much more time to discuss issues than RTÉ etc would have time to give.

yet the two Oireachtas TV channels have been on the web for years, as they started them assuming DTT would exist. Maybe the issue is distribution and transmission costs rather than origination.

I see that someone has updated the wiki page to include 3e in the FTA line up

I know that this isn't confirmed, but it would be a good addition.
I wonder if RTE / Comreg will allow 3e to be carried on Mux1 ?

It would be up to BCI. Comreg only licence the spectrum.
