I have a scientific calculator with the usual functions e.g.

sin, cos, tan and their inverses,
    powers and roots
    logs and inverses
    factorial
    exponential
    basic stats functions.

Do I need anything more sophisticated than this for LC higher?

Nope, especially not a graphing/programmable calculator, as they're disallowed. (Programmable definitely, anyway.)

Most of the calculator work for HL LC is trigonometric things and powers. Make sure it has Radians mode (though why it wouldn't I do not know).
