    Amtrak site

This is a kind of busy week for Washington accommodation.
I'd say bargains will be few and far between. Have you any family you could stay with?

If you're not looking for accommodation this coming week, then try http://www.washingtonhotels.com/

    Thanks for those links

I will be staying in Washington next weekend. But hopefully the Obama / Biden circus will have calmed down by then :D

The "Acela Express" is the name of the train to catch. It takes 2 hours 50 as opposed to 3 -> 4 hours on the smaller regional trains.

Should be less than $75 one-way

    Hello
    Just checked the Amtrak site.

    Its $200 return

The bus might be a better option

    http://www.washny.com/sched_stops.html

It takes 4 hrs each way but is only $50 return

i done the train from NYC to DC in november. i got the northeast regional regular service as opposed to the acela express. it's not that much slower, journey time was 3 hours and 15 minutes. i bought my ticket online, cost me $175 return. was as good value as any flight i could find and much more interesting too.

    i stayed here:http://www.redroof.com/reservations/inn_details.asp?num=254

grand hotel, competitively priced and it's only 10 minutes walk from union station in washington. it's only a 10/15 minute walk from the hotel to the capitol building and mall. it also has an irish bar downstairs that does a good irish breakfast as well as pints.

You could get the megabus. Depending on time of day it's either $8 or $14 each way.
