It would be the stamp of extreme marksmanship or potluck but I wouldn't chance it unless there's a mountain behind the deer. Why would you aim for the brain while you have the heart, the lungs, the liver and the kidneys nicely packed in the body and a hit on either one of them will be a quick kill. The only vital in the head is the brain and if you don't sufficiently damage that it's goodbye deer and a slow death from a lingering headwound.

To be honest, this is antagonism. It's a big dick measuring contest.

"I'm a better hunter than you."

    "No you're not, you're just a shooter!"

"Eh, I hunt animals, therefore I'm a hunter."

"Bollocks! Unless you can tickle him with the gun-barrel you haven't stalked close enough."

    (All together now...) "rabblerabblerabblerabblerabble..."

And nobody settles on anything. Look, people want to hunt different ways. If they're happy to take longer shots (responsibly) it's none of your business, and if you want to stalk closer when you could take a longer shot, it's none of their business. To suggest that longer shots are a sign of the end of hunting skills is looking to pick a fight.

i would think hunting skills are vanishing also field craft but mostly sports men are vanisning . i was stalking last week with a guy and we were watching deer and talked about sports men or the lack of them now . according to noel grimes ,IDS. were a nation of trophy hunters .quote from sporting rifle feb 09.i have not heard of him ?.is the distance of a shot or shot placement relevant ,to me shot placement is most important distance is to a point as i know my capabilities or the lack of them i cull enough to know when to shoot when not to .

Where is the sport at shooting an animal at 200 yrds there is too much chance at error, is the idea not to get in as close as possible to ensure a quick and safe kill. I am not a deer stalker but if after a fox would get him in a close as I could then decide on taking the shot based on my capabilities and that of the gun.

I stand by my comment on previous post that if your that desperate to ensure you get something try tactical nukes or rocket launchers, that should do it.

I prefer to take the word sport out of it.
more like duty, duty to do it right.
One needs to recognise the own ability and I'm sure this is the case most of times. Years ago 100yds was possibly regarded as a risky shot now we shoot 1/4" groups at that range. Meaning we could just about always shoot into the eye of a deer. In theory anyway.
I think we have to try to improve our kit, gear and training so that we have less runners. At our own range limits.
One problem is some stalkers still have their 1930 stalking rifle of fantastic European make and can't understand how someone say's they shoot better with a modern rifle.
My father bought a 308 Sako in 1969, pre Garcia. it was a piece of ..... always was. First shot out of a clean barrel would not hit a A4 paper at 100yds, cold barrel shot was also bad. This rifle had a track record of injured kudu, bushbuck and deer. I had it rebarreld with a lothar walther and also my father was gobsmacked at the accuracy, clean, cold or hot.
First time I shot at a 300m target I was out under 2" on the first shot. That is a 4" circle.
    200yds head shot??
I think some can and some should not even think about it.

Depends what you call "hunting skills".This sounds more like "riflemanship".
Anyone out there able to call in deer without a fancy mechanical game caller, just using a blade of a certain grass?Hunting skills are somthing totally different to shooting skills.

    As a wise man said

"You can only shoot them once, the sport is in the hunt"

Seems there is the riflemanship skill and hunting skill and some people put more emphasis on one or the other.

I could buy a longer range rifle and bag more rabbits or I could get advice on getting close to them with my .22lr or even my camera.

How close can you experienced guys get to your rabbit...deer etc?

Do we have a sticky thread on advice/tips and tricks for Hunting skills?
