I just came across this pretty impressive collection of digitised and blown-up German stamps from a Wikipedia contributor called Nightflyer (link below). I'm not into stamp collecting, but what was is clear here is that the BRD and DDR were trying to outdo each other in terms of quality ... these are stunningly well produced miniatures ... I suppose I needed the blow-ups to fully appreciate them.

There was/is clearly something about stamps that made them - both - an ideal national propaganda channel, but instead of the god-awful radio broadcasts, their aesthetic qualities came through unscathed to actually create an artistic medium which was actually fomented - not suppressed - by political motivations.

BTW I am not Fintan O'Toole. Pretty good impression though, eh?

I dunno, stamp design kinduv prospered in the antagonism of postwar Europe. Câd a deir sibh? Was denken Sie davon? Whatcha reckon?

Dat link I was talking about: indulge!
