So as i have just given myself the unofficial title of "heavy bag retard" I taught I would ask people what injuries they have sustained in training thru their own fault, or any funny stories of minor injuries caused!

So i started some mixed martial arts training yesterday and we were working the heavy bag with knees strikes etc. all fine, then nubbins here decides sure it wud be a laugh to throw a low blow shot at said heavy bag. Sure what could be funnier than low blowing a heavy bag? well, everything! I hit itand caught it at my wrist, resulting in me giving myself a rather sharp tug at the elbow! exactly like an armbar. It turned out to be funny simply cause of the abuse! i am wrapped up now and unable to bend it without pain!

ahhh lesson learned, I wont ever act the the clown again in training!

    (first time training btw)

    Nothing really funny, or spectacular.

But during a Judo demo a few months back I broke a rib, in front of a whole load of school children too - big Marto was carried off the mat in agony :o

I've been choked out more than once too :o I hate tapping to a choke, silly I know but I'm a pig headed fvcker.

I popped my ankle, destroying my ligaments and tendon dancing around like an idiot in BJJ. I then popped it again 2 weeks later, drunk stepping off a curb. Sorest year of my life!

I broke my arm doing a jump spinning hook kick, on a freshly polished wooden floor. Another time put myself in for a pile of sparring and competitions and ended up with post concussion and getting a ct scan. :o

A year or so ago I put myself out of a competition kicking a small sponge ball and catching my toe on the mat during a warm up, breaking it.

Going throught bear hugs and the like in KM class and my mate who is a little stocky bloke bear hugged me and fractured a rib in my left side. I couldn't even pull out the combo I was meant to because he had me gripped so hard. Small guy, with huge arms and big chest. You know the type.

after working the bag for five 2 min rounds i tried to top it off with some light dumbell curls. when i finished i tried to put them back on the rack and somehow caught my little finger between the weight and the rack taking a chunk out of it. couldn't move it for weeks!

A girl in my old Judo club dislocated an elbow playing leap-frog during the warm-up.

I recently heard of another Judoka who had an ankle in a cast but decided to try some non-contact training. While practicing uchi-mata by himself he tore a muscle in his backside due to the extra weight at the end of his leg. The doctor was very puzzled when he was presented with the secondary injury!

Not really a 'silly' injury but... my brother dislocated my elbow with his pelvis during a BJJ class :o

getting it put back in place was awful!

Silly injury - broken rib from walking into a sidekick

Unfortunate injury - tearing my hamstring and medial ligament in my left knee when landing from a flying sidekick

No more sparring injury - detached retina (successfully repaired - but contact sports no longer an option)

In fairness, only the cracked was due to excessive contact.

The detached retina probably started as a small fissure which expanded over the course of a month or so, until I realised that there was something wrong. It's hard to point to any particular contact as being the cause of it. I don't remember getting any hard blows to the head around that time. Apparently it doesn't have be really blunt trauma for this to occur.

Word of caution to MA practitioners - regular eye tests might not be a bad thing.
