Buying a second hand piano

If I see a piano advertised as "needs tuning" would there be any point going to look at it? Would a good piano still sound like a good piano even if it's out of tune?

Why not chance your arm with a free one instead.
they pop up on dublinwaste.ie fairly often.

Been keeping an eye on dublinwaste for the past month or so but I'm a bit too far away. If one came up in "good" condition I might make the trip up to Dublin.

It depends how out of tune it is. I'd say go look and see. It will have to be tuned after being moved anyway.

not sure how true this is but after you move it you have to let it sit for a week or two before tuning it too!

Thanks for the replies. I'm buying it for my son but I'm not musical. Almost all of the local adverts I see say "needs tuning" so this confusses me a bit. My son has a very good ear so just wondering if could he hear that the piano would have a good sound if it had a tuning. I guess we'll soon learn when we look at a few.
