I have been browsing this cycling forum for a while now and every Friday I see a thread appearing for "Saturday Spin", and its always aimed at the Dublin cyclists, I am just wondering are there many other members on here from down my direction. Maybe we could organise a spin from our neck of the woods sometimes and see how it goes.

Yeah, I have come across them on a few occasions, however, I was just wondering if there were many on here who are just like me, would be interested in going out for a regular spins. Something similar to what happens in Dublin at the weekend.

I'm in Dungarvan and usually go out with Dungarvan CC most weekends but wouldn't mind an occasional boards spin. Sounds like a good idea.

Hey Aquos sounds like a good idea to me, I would be up for this just let me know where and when.

Thanks to incessant crashes, illness and loss of morale, my form is way out at the moment so I might be up for a boards spin or two, but generally, I will be training with the club (and thats a hard slog at the minute on account of the tough preparations for the RAS, the pace is electric these days and will only get higher - I am off for a training camp in the canaries next month with the team and I am worse than I was the first day I got on a bike! - producing 35% less power at the same HR than I was 4 months ago, I didn't realise you could lose that much !!)

Anyone up for any nighttime spins during the week ? I could probably use some company to motivate me on those, need to be on the road for a couple of hours most nights rain hail or shine for the next month or so to avoid being a complete laughing stock when the serious stuff starts. What about you showry ? Fancy doing a spin or two after work ?

I could go for that Quigs, have been concentrating on running lately but f$cked up my ankle this morning so if it's not right after the weekend will be looking to do something in the evenings. Will let you know. Although I'm not sure what kind of performance improvements you'll get cycling with me.

    Hi,

I'm a member of the Comeragh CC and we have club spins on Saturdays 10am & Sunday 9.30am from the Bank of Ireland in Lisduggan.

True, as Quigs said the RAS lads are training at the moment and the pace is a little high. However, I'm a leisure cyclist and some do head out on both mornings. If we have a bigger number of leisure riders we can do our own route at our own pace.

So, all Waterford cyclists that want a leisurely spin with a group, do show up on the Saturday or Sunday and we can do our own thing and have a chat along the way.

    You're more than welcome!!

Well, I'm non-race and a few others are also. As there is not many leisure riders every weekend, I tend to go with the race guys for as long as I can and then work my own way home. If there is a few riders there on the morning that don't want the high pace, we can go at our own pace.

Best thing is to come along. Also, log onto the ComeraghCC website create an account and go to the Leisure/Distance section. You'll find me there.

No problem at all. You're more than welcome. The more leisure numbers we have the better. We can head off at our own pace. Go to the ComeraghCC website and log onto the forum there, you'll find me in the Leisure/Distance section.

Boy, this thread has grown since I last logged on. Good to see that there are a few from Waterford on here. I will also check out the Comeragh CC forum. May be interested in this weekend also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 724 ✭✭✭shapez

Do come along. And bring a friend. :D There is a lot of cyclists around Waterford that don't realise that there is a cycling club there. A lot are put off by the fact that there is a lot of racers in the club. This doesn't mean that we don't have a leisure side. Of course we do, just that numbers are low at the moment.

Although I would caution that Sunday would be the better day for Leisure riders... (bigger crowd and easier pace).

Ah if that's the case I'll give it a miss. This saturday suits me, so if anyone wants to meet up for a spin let me know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,183 ✭✭✭Quigs Snr

Hey, if Saturday is what suits you, shapez will be there and so will I. I doubt I will hack it with the race crew for a couple of weeks yet whilst I build back up, but one of us will look after you ! Give it a go, you may as well.

Don't be demoralised. Drop up to the Bank at 10am (Saturday) or 9.30am (Sunday) and I'll be there anyway. If it means the 2 of us or anyone else that wants to join in, heading out for a casual spin, so be it. We'll have a chat with you, see how far/fast you want to go, etc. Bring plenty of food just in case.

Well, that was an experience. So much for a good start with 4 of us falling on black ice about 5k into it. Good to meet Ian & Nicky. Hope to see you around again. How did you find it?

  • Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 9,072 Mod ✭✭✭✭Aquos76

What direction did ye go this morning. I was out at 9am and headed out the Cork road, and then on in to Kill, then on to Kilmac and back in the main cork road again. The only bit of ice that we encountered was out in Kill.

Hi Pat, Quigs snr sent me a message earlier telling me what happened.I hope everyone is ok,the back roads were bad.The pace was to fast for me but I enjoyed it for the little bit I could hang on. Good to meet you also, I'll be down there again ---thanks for hanging on for me ----sound

Aquos, the ice was behind Kilmeaden on the road behind Mt Congreve just before you come out at the Cosy Thatch/Thai on the road to Portlaw/Carrick. It was totally invisible. I certainely didn't know it was there until I felt my back wheel disappear ! 4 riders down, no serious damage though although one or two of us might take a day or two off to recover (my hip, elbow and rear axle are certainley trying to convince me to stay in bed tomorrow)! Thats bike riding for you though, you may as well get used to sliding on the tarmac if you want to be a bike racer !

No problem at all. As I mentioned to you, we're trying to get a leisurely group going. The more we have we can then decide our own routes and head off ourselves.

The knees were sore yesterday afternoon. I put the legs up for the evening in front of the fire. Not too bad today. Might head out later for a handy spin if the rain clears.

Lads, the Barrow Wheelers are organising a very, casual leisure spin next Sunday (1st Feb.) from New Ross. Sign on from 9am and riding out at 10am. www.barrowwheelers.com. This would very much interest you if you are looking for a nice social spin with a group. See you there!! :D

How's it going Pat? Jez Quigs was saying a few of ye went down. Deadly this time of year with the ice. At least no one was seriously hurt. I'll pop down next sunday maybe I can hang in there a bit longer.

Was cycling myself out Kill way 2 weeks ago , seems to be a right black spot for ice . Ended up cycling on the "wrong side" of the road when traffic wasn't present 'cause that's where the sun was directed ( my side of the road was in an icy shadow from the ditch) . A most uncomfortable ride finally terminated when I happened on a Ford Focus buried in a ditch ( on my side of the road ) about a half mile Waterford -side of Kill, and lady being gingerly helped from the vehicle by people from a nearby farmhouse . If I had been at that bend 2 minutes earlier I was mincemeat .
Had a nice cycle myself yesterday morning , ice free for the most part except around Clonea , also had the added bonus of meeting Sean Kelly ( in his An Post gear) cycling against me on the Lemybrien / Carrick road , certain it was him anyway ...........

Ill give it another go alright, Think if didnt get that puncture i would have expired somewhere near piltown, Pace was a bit fast for me. ill set myself a goal of been able to keep up at some stage!

Its worth noting that in March, most of us race types will be on our travels every Sunday, so I am told that its a much more tolerable pace on Sunday mornings. I couldn't confirm this as I did race pretty much every Sunday last year, Shapez might be able to confirm though.

No way!! The pace nearly doubles after March!! :D The leisure riders only keep in with the racers for warmth over the winter!! We go nuts in the summer!! :D

No, seriously. The pace on Sundays over the summer is a lot better than the training pace over the winter. In saying that, I do a lot of sportives over the summer which are good fun too. Summer spins are a lot easier for people all the same.

But, as I said previosuly, I'm trying to get a leisure section going for the community and if we have a few leisure people about at the weekends we'll do our own thing at our own speed instead of trying keep up with the racers. Nothing leisure about that!! :P

Hey Pat, How's It going? would like to give this a shot, but I want to get In some serious miles yet. My plan Is to do the ring of Kerry and the Sean Kelly and what ever else I think I can just about finish. I'll be down at the bank this Sunday, hopefully the route will be a bit flatter for a bit. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,183 ✭✭✭Quigs Snr

Henboy, this thing starts in New Ross, I think you should do it. There are a bunch of us riding down to it and back again, but if you are worried about the miles you might drive down to it. It is a flat course and the majority of the riders will be taking it at a very, very leisurely pace, some of the local clubs have dedicated touring sections and they like to take it steady. And rightly so ! I reckon you will breeze through it, 2 guys I know who haven't ridden further than 50k in their lives are doing it ! Every one of these things that I have done are 100% easier than our standard Sunday spins...

Give it a go, you will surprise yourself. Whats the worst that can happen ? You will feel great when you have done it too.

Fair enough Quigs I'll give It ago, I,ll drive down to New Ross. Where about in Ross is the sign on. Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 724 ✭✭✭shapez

    Hey,

The sign on is from 9-10am in the Geraldines GGA club. The easiest way to get to this is follow the ring road around New Ross, heading for Wexford. After about 3km you will come to a roundabout at the top of a hill, take the left here, sign posted for Enniscorthy. You will pass a Tescos on your right, continue on for about another 2km, then through a set of traffic lights, after the lights and over a small hill you will see a filling station on your right, take the right hand turn at this filling station and the GAA club is about 100 yards on your right.

    See you there!!

Quigs: What time are some of the lads rolling out at? I'm considering this myself for a long one.

  • Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 9,072 Mod ✭✭✭✭Aquos76

What time does this event actually start at. I know the sign on is between 9-10 but does the event start then at 10am or what way does it work. I am thinking of heading down myself also, seen as the weather is not great for tomorrow, I wont get a spin in then.
