    Hi all,
    Probably wrong section but,
I passed my test in an automatic and was wondering where on my license it says this?
I have to photocopy it for work as they require a full license even though I will be driving my own car!!
    Thanks

Thanks for prompt reply. Stupid question but where is this, as the restriction section is blank on the license.

Looks like New Zealand license holders should be able to convert to a full (automatic) Irish license. While I took my full New Zealand driving test in a manual, my license doesn't state this (the restricted does), hence the irish authorities would not give an unrestricted license. So, I'd have to do a driving test here to make it worthwhile.
I guess I'd be treated as a learner still if driving a manual car?
Would the driving test still be the 'standard' one?
    Just wondering if anyone knows.

At the moment you cannot, but there has been a lot of negotiation going on regarding this matter, and I've just got an email today from the Irish authorities stating this will be the case. Don't know how long this would take to implement.

Just wondering if anyone has done the test to convert an auto to a manual, and whether this is the same as the standard driving test? I've a learners license here (as until this is established, I still need to go through the process).

This is what I'm referring to - an email received from someone at the RSA in Ireland. So, while I can't exchange at this point in time, it looks like an agreement will be reached.

Thank you for your query in connection with the Recognition of New Zealand (NZ) driving licences in Ireland.

Irish driver licence rules operate within the framework of an EU wide licensing system. The criteria essential for recognition of licences from other countries are testing and licensing regimes which meet the requirements of the EU directive on driver licences and reciprocal recognition of Irish licences. Under the EU requirements – which we operate – there is a distinction which is recorded on the driving licence between automatic and manual transmission. This is not the case as I understand it in NZ, if this position changes in NZ we will review our position on this.

As we stand right now- and following contacts with some EU colleagues- we plan to confirm to NZ authorities that we will exchange on the basis of allowing a person from NZ to drive an automatic vehicle here.

It will mean that a NZ licence holder can drive the equivalent vehicle here with an automatic transmission but will have to take a driving test if s/he wants to drive a manual transmission vehicle. It will also mean that NZ licence holders won’t have to take an Irish theory test for an equivalent vehicle.

Temporary visitors to Ireland who hold a national driving licence or an international driving permit may drive here for the duration of their visit. In this regard temporary may be regarded as a period not exceeding twelve months. An “International driving permit” means a valid and properly completed international driving permit issued to a visitor under the Convention of 1949 by the Competent Authority of the State in which he/she resides, or by an association duly empowered by such an Authority to issue such a permit.

If you have any other queries please do not hesitate to contact me at the number or email below.

    Yours sincerely,

Thanks for your advice anyway. I think that I'll do the driving test so as to have an unrestricted license here, despite having access to an automatic. Would only help if the automatic license swap became available before my driving test (both I may be waiting a while for).

Yeah, there is an agreement being reached apparently. Since Oct 08 Irish licenses have been able to be swapped for NZ ones without any tests, hence why I asked them. If only my country had the 'automatic' restriction on their full licenses.
