I was watching the Golden Globes the other night and as the Camera went around the room, myself and the OH where widly saying who we hated/liked and why.

I remembered that I used to hate the sight of Leo DiCaprio untill films such as Blood Diamond and The Departed came out.

has this ever happend to you?

It's unusal for me anyway to change me mind.

hate is a very strong word to use against someone you don't know, based on nothing more than a public persona.

there's plenty i'd find irritating, annoying or any numbr of other words, but i think hate is too stong.

Its pushing it to say hes a good actor.
Hes an ok actor but he chooses good projects and so I have more respect for him.

I would have said the same thing except he is actually fantastic in the Aviator, which was really the standout film for me that made me take notice of him as something more (though there were other films before then that was was ok in.)

    Can this go in reverse?

I use to like Adam Sandler for some of his earlier work and then he went downhill, picked up slightly and then nosedived even further.

Similar thing with Eddie Murphey I guess.

Thought The Aviator was rubbish, I actually fell asleep it was so boring.

    matter of opinion.

It was one of my favourite films of that year.

I used to like Tom Cruise and then he started jumping on couches and ranting about Scientology

I used to hate Nicholas Cage but now I think he's just misunderstood (esp wrt to some of the projects he chooses). Stuff like Vampires Kiss and Gone in 60 Seconds will be cherished by audiences , in say, 50 or 100 years from now.

I used to dislike Vin Diesel but now I...... Oh wait I still dislike him.

I used to think that Michael Cera was pretty good however, having seen him in other films I don't think he's that great of an actor. He seems to play the same type of character in each film he does.

He plays the shy/nervous guy in Superbad, Juno and throughout the whole tv series of Arrested Development.

I also used to hate DiCaprio. To me he was always the pretty boy from Titanic. But sure enough he's started taking on really good roles and doing a fine job too. Kudos.

    I have lots of times

But then again I am a milliner

Likewise DiCaprio. I loved the Basketball Diaries, then started disliking him because he was the pretty boy who all the girls liked, and who starred in films which girls liked. Then he started taking on much better roles and now I always pay attention to the films he's in. He hasn't given a bad performance that i can remember.

Also, Russell Crowe. Used to dislike him for no apparent reason. Then I saw Master and Commander and my view of him really changed. I forgot he was in LA confidential (because Guy Richie stole the show), and he really hasn't been in many films. But he has chosen the right ones, and he really is a fine actor.

+1 for Leo Di Caprio, what male didnt hate him after Titanic?

    The Departed
    Gangs Of New York
    The Beach
    Catch Me If You Can
    Blood Diamond

Now, his presence in a movie would make me want to see it.

Yeah, but also Romeo and Juliet. He was a whiny cornmunch in that. But yeah, can't really fault anything post-titanic. Body of Lies is sweet too.

to be fair the character of romeo is a whiny cornmunch to begin with :D

Can't say I hate anyone, just some actors work I don't hink is as good.
Will Ferrell is one, he's being playing the same character who overcomes his stupidity for a few films now, with the exception of Stranger Than Fiction, he should stop writing for himself and do some other work with other people and not John C. Reilly and David Koechner and those lads!

I dislike Will Ferell as a comedic actor. He's basically the same guy in all those films. However as a semi-serious actor, he can be quite good. Stranger than Fiction was a brilliant move. He played the part well. But then he went downhill from there.

Im kinda the same...except it was more like i forgot he was a good actor. I hated him after i saw 'The Rock', 'Family Man' 'Gone in 60 seconds' (:D sorry).

But the fact is thats hes been in 'Raising Arizona' , 'RumbleFish', 'Leaving Las Vegas', 'Red Rock West' and 'Vampires Kiss' to name a handful.

I think 'Lord Of War' was the one that won me back. A good choice of projects

What all this DiCaprio bashing about. He was an excellent actor long before Titanic, do you remember the Basketball Diaries, This Boy's life and of course Whats eating Gilbert Grape.

He has always been a very talented actor and has improved imo as he has went along.

For me I have one example of both.

Tom Hanks, this wacky comedy actor who I did not rate, then suddenly out of nowhere he goes all serious and we see one of the best actors of our generation. So from dislike to really like him.

The one who I really liked and now dislike or should I say he dissapoints me now is Charlie Sheen. How does such a fine actor(The Platoon, Wall Street) end up on tv in a comedy show. Its not dissapointment I dislike him now.

i do now, and always have, disliked natalie portman. Maybe i just dont get it, but to me she just cant act!! And picking small, artsy films doesnt make you a good actress....it just proves your inadequacy to a much smaller audience.
And dont get me started on star wars...the pair of them should be taken out back and shot for crimes against humanity!!!!!!

John C Reilly - went from a fine underrated serious actor to now Ferrell's comedic partner

In fairness He has always displayed great comic ability. eg here in Boogie Nights

Aside, I think this was the precise moment I sat up and asked myself "who is this PT Anderson guy?"

Once he did 'Hot Shots' there was no way he could be taken seriously as an actor.

I would love to try the drugs you're taking svp..
While I think he is a very underused actor, he is not exactly a young actor starting out in hollywood..and the films he chooses are mostly absolute muck..he really can act if he wants to..he's proved that several times.

OT I agree with OP, I thought Leo was a douche, until I saw in Gangs of New York/Catch Me If You Can... he's an excellent actor and a good force in making decent hollywood films imo

to say di caprio is an excellent actor is an insult to all genuinely excellent actors.

    hes an ok actor...nothing more

Leonardo Di Caprio seems to be a common theme, I'd go along with that. Matt Damon is another one I used cringe at but now like.

As far as the opposite way goes, Kirsten Dunst.

Di Caprio. I'd say a lot of people had to forgive him for Titanic, but he has pulled it back, in fairness.

i admit that shes attractive, but if you good looking be a model, not an actress!
i dont dislike her because shes a good looking girl, i dislike her because she cant act and shes everywhere!!

I briefly felt a positive emotion for Jim Carrey after Eternal Sunshine but it's long since faded. In fact I dislike him more now that I know he has talent than when he was just a talentless Canadian pastiche of Robin Williams.

I used to kind of like Tom Hanks until he started doig all that ****e such as Philadelphia and Forrest Gump.

It seems like a lot of people's first exposure to Leonardo DiCaprio was in Titanic, which says something about most folks' general knowledge of film.

    Who cares?
Well a lot of people are just anti lovey dovey movies. He still done a good job in that movie. But the fact is that people see a huge girly movie and instantly dislike the actors.

If you had seen him in all the movies before that one and knew just how good he was, then you would clearly see that his agent saw this as his vehicle to the top of the chain. He grabbed that opportunity with both hands.

Guess I'm not a woman so. I don't hate her at all, in fact I quite like her. Apart from in that Zach Braff thing that was supposed to, like, speak to my generation.

    What rubbish

So if someone saw him in that first , it means they have little knowledge of film?

I first saw Guy Pearce in Home and Away , does that mean my knowledge accrued of film is now useless? OH NOOOOOOOOO

Jude Law. While I never hated him, I always thought he was just a pretty boy playing off his looks and accent. Still think that, but after Cold Mountain, Road to Perdition etc I do think he's a good actor (but my god that movie with Norah Jones was woeful)
