I have a friend who bought an '89 Mini cos she's been besotted with them forever but she is having problems. She can't quite be described as an enthusiast just yet so a couple of small problems are ruining the experience for her....

The block is cracked- this just means a new engine straight away, doesn't it. Any idea where you might get one or other parts for Minis?? Are there any mini clubs in Cork/ Munster. My googling hasn't turned up much.

Funny that, I didn't think to ask- she still drives it. I suppose it can only get worse, though.

Forgive my ignorance here but it's a 'sport' model of some kind. Would it not fit or would she have to go another 998cc??

Anyone know how much she would you expect to pay for an engine in good condition as a direct replacement??

I wouldve thought the mini engines were ridiculously strong

The Spi engine can be converted to run on a carb and will fit. What part of the south are you in,The Irish Mini Owners Club have a run on Sunday in Killarney and the organizer Dick Mason is a good man for working on Minis and getting parts. Link to the run.

I'll tell her about the run. The weather isn't looking the best though. Damn, if she goes, I'd love to go with her but at 6'4", I'll have to sit it out until she buys a new mini...

I am 6'5" and drove Minis for years. All you want are a couple of seat extension backets to move the seat back and you are laughing :D

The spi engine and gearbox is a straight swap for your 998 engine. You will also neeed an inlet manifold, carb, air filter and dizzy.

Are you sure that the engine block is cracked?

If this is true the car won't be driving, and I've only heard of that happening twice and never on a standard engine.

......yeah i was wondering that too. I didn't realise that she was still driving. Why do you think its cracked ?

where is your friend living, you should get the car looked at by a mini owner who would be familiar with these problems. i live in limerick and would be happy to have a quick look.
