Cross Country Good or Bad for you

    Hi;

    I am a novice runner and did first marathon last year.
    Can anyone tell me does cross country cause you more injuries and is best to avoid it, if you plan to run a marathon later in the year?

    Different people probably react differently to different surfaces. For me, cross-country is the most forgiving on my legs. There is the risk that you don't really know exactly what to expect until you turn up on the day. I don't think I've often picked up injuries from races though, I tend to be well warmed up and in good shape on race day.

    Good running on a softer surface, bad twisting an ankle in a hole, fun racing through muddy puddles, bad getting cold afterwards.

    good - the softer ground keeps you legs more protected, and the harder races mean you have a better base coming out of the winter season. your approach these race should factor in what time you want to run your next marathon. 24posts.

    Well i think it depends on what you mean, do you mean training on grass full time of running the odd cross country race. I would say you would gain more from full training been done on grass, then running on road all the time and then doing a few XC races. For a marathon i'm planning on doing all my training on grass with some nice hills too even on longer run.
