Real open probe into alleged manipulation at AGM

Real Madrid will open a probe into press reports that club president Ramon Calderon manipulated last month's stormy annual general assembly vote in order to get its fiscal accounts for 2008 and 2009 approved.

'We have decided to investigate the matter and we have asked the club's commission for social discipline to confirm these facts,' the defending Spanish champion's director for members, Luis Barcena, told a news conference on Tuesday.

'In the case that any club members are found to implicated, they will immediately be expelled from the club,' he added.

Earlier Tuesday sports daily Marca, citing anonymous witnesses and sources which it said were 'absolutely reliable', said Calderon had stacked the December 7 annual general assembly with a significant number of fake delegates in order to get the club's fiscal accounts and electoral assembly members approved.

The accounts for fiscal year 2009, which forecast a 9.4 percent rise in sales over the previous year to a record 400.2 million euros (536.3 million dollars), were approved with 564 votes in favour, 517 against and 32 abstentions.

The accounts for fiscal 2008 were approved by only a slightly larger margin at the assembly, which was marked by jeering directed at Calderon as well as calls for him to resign over the club's poor performance this year.

Barcena said access to the assembly was strictly controlled as members had to present their ID cards to enter the conference centre where it was held.

'It was an historic decision, given that nothing of the sort had ever been done,' he said, adding as the club's director for members he is 'solely' responsible for the outcome of the assembly.

At the time of the assembly Real was under fire from many of its supporters as a string of injuries to key players had left it trailing its arch rival Barcelona.

But since the Christmas break the club has started to close the gap and is now in second place with 35 points, 12 fewer than Barcelona

All I can say is that I actually watched this thing on tv at the time and would not at all be surprised if it turns out to have some truth behind it. Marca are sayting they have the evidence.

Edit: I have done a little more reading on this and seemingly the "ultra sur" Reals Franco inbreds copped this during the AGM and pointed it out at the time but were ignored.

Calderon shouldn't be re-elected. The fact that he let Ultra's back into the ground when the team was playing badly to enhance the Bernabeu's atmosphere is ridiculous. I know alot of Barca fans who would demand our president step down if that happened. That's sending out the worst possible message really.

Cant stand Real Madrid, the club is run like a fantasy football team.

TBH i think this issue is just the tip of the iceberg. The way the club conducts itself is laughable

That was the night of the Sevilla defeat wasn't it? I remember people saying there was nearly war at it.

Though if it means they take Ronaldo away from the Premiership and spend stupid money on it, I'd let them do what they wanted.:pac:

I'm sure Calderon will have some grand story to 'explain' this latest incident. I won't be surprised if there are elections this summer when it is all said and done.

Marca have only gone and published the pictures of some of the guys who Calderon had vote for to approve the accounts at the assembly. None of these guys are socios or allowed to vote.

EDIT: This bombshell coming from Marca is a shock considering the publications close links to Real Madrid.

This really does sound like something Perez would try and pull so that he can attempt to take popularity from Calderon, thus it's like the start of his potential campaign for the elections in a year and a half. With the amount of money Perez has at his disposal we can all expect more and more articles from now till Summer 2010. And now that Calderon has no longer got the backing of Marca and they are actually against him, he has almost zero chance of being re-elected, even if they sign Ronaldo and win the CL this year or next.

You missed out the best bit too, apparently one of the people was an Atletico Madrid socio!!! Haha! If Calderon has an ounce of desency he'd resign. Instead, he'll pin the blame on a board member, pay him for his "special services" and go on with his life.

Calderon fired two people today that offered their resignation over the matter. He refused it and then fired them. He held a press conference and said this is awful news, they wont vote again, I wont resign, I am innocent, blah blah blah.

Real president to resign over rigged assembly claims - reports

MADRID (AFP) — Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon will resign on Friday in the wake of allegations that he rigged last month's annual general assembly which approved the club's accounts for 2008 and 2009, Spanish media reported late on Thursday.
Calderon will be replaced by the defending Spanish champion's current vice president, Vicente Bolunda, radio Onda Cero reported.
Members of the board of Real have demanded that the 57-year-old "urgently" step down which could "speed up his resignation and he could announce it tonight or tomorrow," the online edition of El Mundo reported, citing unnamed club sources.
Late on Wednesday Calderon, whose four-year mandate expires in 2010, said he had fired two of his close aides over the affair but he rejected calls that he step down, saying he had done nothing wrong.
"Quitting is for cowards. Leaving would not fix anything, it would leave a void and force the club to call elections," he told a news conference.
Sports daily Marca alleged Tuesday that he stacked a December 7 annual general assembly with fake delegates to get the club's annual accounts and electoral assembly members approved by a slim margin.
The next day it published a photograph on its front page taken at the assembly with a yellow circle around the heads of ten delegates who it says had voted even though they were not authorized to do so.
The daily published a new picture on Thursday to back its claim that Calderon knew personally some of the unauthorised persons who voted at the assembly, a charge the Real president denied a day earlier at the news conference.
Calderon had said late on Tuesday in a radio interview that he would probably not stand for re-election when his current mandate ends in 2010.
Earlier Thursday sports daily AS, which is close to Real, said he would probably try to save his head until the end of the season before calling elections over the summer.

    Calderon set to quit

    Real chief to step down

    Last updated: 15th January 2009

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon is set to resign from his post with the Spanish giants.

According to reports in Spain, Calderon will tender his resignation on Friday after allegations were made about the club's accounts.

It is claimed that Calderon stacked a general assembly with fake delegates in December, in order to get the club's annual accounts approved.

Calderon said on Wednesday that he had fired two of his close aides and that he would not quit.

However, it appears members of the Real board have forced Calderon to step down.

Vice-president Vicente Bolunda is now on stand-by to take over the reins, once Calderon's departure is confirmed.

57-year-old Calderon, was elected to power in 2006 succeeding Florentino Perez, and he had already stated he was unlikely to stand again once his mandate was over in 2010.

But it now seems his tenure has ended more than a year early.

Florentino Perez must be in hysterics. This nicely paves the way for his return to the club.

Just to fill everyone in on what exactly happened.

On 7th Dec at the clubs AGM it is alleged that Calderon manipulated the vote to ensure a favourable vote for the clubs accounts, this seasons budget and new board members to be passed by having numerous persons vote in favour who were not entitled to do so.

Calderon has always caused waves since being appointed Real Madrid president and along the way has made himself many enemies. Some of the more notable controversies he has caused were his broken promises of signing Kaka, Fabregas which was what he promised if elected (big deal in Spain), when he won the presidency there was many irregularities with the postal votes which he seemingly decided to ignore.

Also when he threw himself on the floor for all to see after Real beat Zaragoza to win La liga. An action which drew widespread condemnation as not befitting a club president. The whole Cristiano Ronaldo affair in which he was accused of neglecting the planned signings of players in the hope of signing Ronaldo which never materialised and then the loss of Robinho who left because he was not happy at being used as leverage in the Ronaldo deal and the clubs refusal to negotiate a new contract with him until the Ronaldo affair was sorted.

Also before Xmas when he was accused of using the clubs money for his own personal expenses. The resignation of the academy director who accused Calderon of having no faith or interest in the clubs youth setup. Then finally the blundering signings of Huntelaar and Diarra which they made unaware of the fact that only one could be registered for the champions league and then got their lawyers to argue it to UEFA and were rejected.

All in all Calderon is definitely the most colourful and controversial president Real Madrid has had in a long time. Never far from the limelight and always reliable for putting his foot in it. I can’t say that he will be missed by the madridistas.
