Guitar Insurance??

Hi

I just got a Rickenbacker 4003 and I want to insure it. there are a couple of places that specialise in insuring musical instruments abroad but I cant find any in Ireland.
Does anywhere do it?

Coincidence, I was just about to make a thread on this subject...

I have no idea where you'd get insurance or what the procedure is. I *think* I recall someone saying you have to provide proof of purchase.

Does anyone know if you can add guitars on to your house insurance ? For some strange reason I get a bit paranoid every now and then at the thought of a break in or fire.

I only got the guitar yesterday, but there was a crowd in the us called www.anderson-group.us I emailed them and they said the cover worldwide but I would be a bit wary if I did have to claim in the future because how would they know. Ive no idea who would do it here

Just check directly with your house insurance company.. On ours, if the item was over 2k (iirc) we just had to list it as a high value item and it would be covered. You might also want to check where it's covered, as a previous policy only covered items stolen from our house or vehicle..

but if its stolen at a gig or damaged in transport or something it wouldnt be covered under your house policy

I checked this out before and there were too many stupid conditions and it was too bloody expensive. A lot of the companies with Musical Instrument insurance policies won't insure electric instruments or pretty much anything used outside of an orchestra setting.

I wouldn't insure with an insurance company outside the country, it'd just get complicated if anything went wrong.


One thing I would recommend is taking some good photo's of your instrument (inc. the serial number) and keep a few copies of them along with the receipt.

Basically because of the risk. Insurance is all about risk.

I don't have a copy of the conditions anymore, so I can't give you the full rundown.

I had several guitars insured seperatly under my home and contents insurance a few years back, the house was broken into while i was in vegas and 3 of 5 guitars I had at that time where stolen, the guitars stood me over 5 grand in purchase value and the insurance paid out 3 grand of that.

I'd had them under my insurance for about 5 years by that time, but it took something like 12 months to resolve the issue and I had to get recipts even though they where down as seperate items on the policy, I haven't bothered insuring any since. I can't remember how much extra it cost but I know it expensive.

Holy crap! And you needed reciepts ? I bought my Gibson online but not sure of where the reciept is. I might contact DolphinMusic and ask them would they send me out a duplicate.

What exactly do you do if your guitar is stolen
I know in America you just keep an eye out on Craiglist and geebay and check out all the pawn shops but that doesn't mean you'll get it back :mad:


I suppose there's hope in that Dublin is fairly small and to sell a guitar you've got adverts, buy&sell, gumtree and geebay and then there's the gutiar shops....

out of the 3 that where stolen I got 2 back one after 4/5 weeks (it was one I took home from the states and was pretty rare at the time) and the other a year and a half later and I found out who took them.

What happened exactly ? How did you find them ?

I live in a small town, he tried to sell the first one to a mate, who took it of him and let me know, I persuaded him to get another one, after several attempt's (in pi$$ poor nick) and I never found out what happened to the last one. He sold it i presume, and whoever he sold it to must have been bigger than me.

By the way the guitars where covered for use outside the home as well.
