Ryvita Yay or Nay?

Just wondering what the thinking is on Ryvita crackers, particularly the sesame rye variety.

I've bought a pack and usually eat them dry but they strike me as very salty.

Here's the nutrition data on this particular variety.

Obviously Ryvita alone does not a healthy diet make but I just wonder if the salt is too much?

Always go to the manufacturers site if you can, or better to just read the packet. This is what I keep harping on about in other threads like the WW points one. Many sites get stuff wrong, or recipes can change slightly in different countries, or be out of date.

You might not have noticed but they included fibre in the carbs, when they do not do that here, it can be confusing. Uk site is here

    http://www.ryvita.co.uk/our-brands/crispbread/sesame.php

Multiply the sodium by 2.5 to get the salt. so 1gram per 100g, or 0.1g per slice.

recommendations vary, so I will not even cause arguments ;)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt#Recommended_intake

It doesnt worry me though. Mc Cambridges wholewheat is often recommended here, and it has 0.55g salt per slice, it weight 38g, and has 1.425g per 100g.

You would tend to eat less ryvitas too, 4 being the weight of 1 slice of mc cambridges.

    Sesame is my favourite too.

I read the packet and went to the website but to be honest I'm always wary of company sponsored sites, despite there being laws to ensure correct product nutritional labelling.

Thanks for the info on the salt however. Definitely very tasty but I'm not a fan of salty food (not just for health reasons, I just don't like salty food!).

I can't see a problem with Ryvita if you think in terms of servings, according to the link above the sesame is 0.4g of sodium per 100g. Now a small tin of tuna has about the same amount of salt and while most people would eat a small tin of tuna in one go you would have to eat 10 slices of ryvita all at once to match the tuna in terms of salt.

If you are going to eat baked goods, Ryvita is as good as anything and better than many. It's mostly rye, which is a nice change from all the wheat we normally eat, and it's lower calorie than most things. A decent percentage of fibre too.

Yes, I have given up buying sliced pans. I get my "bread fix" from ryvitas now. I would easily polish off half a sliced pan in a day at 400g, but that is 40 ryvitas! no way I could eat them in a day.

I also spread tomato puree on them, stick on cheese and microwave or grill them, like mini pizzas.

for the past week i have cut out bread and potatoes and have to admit that i am feeling great already!!

for breakie i eat 2 rivitas -with butter and laughing cow.

i find the seasame seed ones (in orange packaging) fine - its an aquired taste!!

loving the tomato puree and cheese idea rubadub. maybe stic a rasher on top too - yummm...

what else could one put on rivitas instead of the repitive laughing cow... preferably something low in sugar, any ideas???

Sometimes I use ryvita instead of croutons/bread roll with soup. Either break them up & throw into the soup, or just dip in like a roll - Works for me anyway!

Alternative toppings........ I use cream cheese & tuna or smoked salmon (but similar to laughing cow I guess!)

I love sesame, on rolls, or in Chinese food. There is a little extra fat in those sesame ones due to the seeds, not enough to worry me though.

I get garlic & herb philadelphia. I also put low fat easy singles and turkey on them. And peanut butter.

I also get salsa dips, intended for tortilla chips. The spicy tomato based ones are low in cals. Just break them up and dip them in.

I'm also usually eating this instead of bread now. Some toppings i've used:

    - peanutbutter
    - Sardines/Tuna
    - Ham and cheddar
    - Salmon and Feta (and pepper)
    - Turkey/Chicken and pesto
    - egg and tomato

you can really put anything on them!

I like the Muesli one. I wrap a couple up in foil and bring them in to work and bring them into work with a mini tub of light Philadelphia. I find it really breaks up the gap between breakfast and lunch for me because I can sometimes have eaten my breakfast 2 and a half hours before I've even gotten in the door at work!

Have totally switched from Bread to Ryvita and have to say I like all the varieties they have. I usually have 4 at lunchtime with tomatoes, melted cheese and sometime mayonnaise!

    Cheers,

I love love RYVITA - an addicted sort of love really!
Almond butter, avocado with a drizzle of olive oil and Arugula are my fav toppings. I like the Sunflower Seeds and Multi Grain Ryvita best! So yummy! I even give the Rye and Oats one to my dog as a snack, he loves it!! :))))
