That special place in hell

Firstly I'm new to the boards, so hi all, have to admit i've been an intermittent lurker for a while, but anyway.

So my year old, very nice Specialized got stolen outside the palace on fleet st the other day at about 8 in the evening, while locked(obviously), I really hope there is a special place in hell for bike thieves.

Anyhow I'm looking for something to replace it reasonably quickly as its used daily, unfortunately money is somewhat tight at the moment. I have around 600 euro (ish), don't mind second hand at all, but its hard to find decent second hand bikes in a hurry.

    Anybody have any cunning plans?

I found a Felt z90 and a felt f55 online from the UK. Both within (well slightly over) my budget they look nice enough, however I have to admit I've not heard much about felt in general. Anyone got some experience with them and can give and opinion?

Felt are a good manufacturer, and sponsor a Pro Team (Garmin Chipotle), so no worries there!

Yea they seem to be. Its weird I've just never really come across them and none of my mates seemed to know much beyond that they had a good rep either. So wanted an opinion from experience. Didn't want to pay for something shiny that was sub par.

Anyone know of a good shop for second hand road bikes in Dublin? The two i've tried had sweet FA.

There's very shops doing second hand bikes. Some will sell high end bikes they get as trade ins. I know Cycle Superstore do it. I think Joe Dalys and Cyclelogical do to.

Knifey_Spooney, if you let us know your preferred frame size, we can try and sell you our used bikes!

    :)

There aren't many around, mostly I think due to the crime aspect. Only shop I know of to get second hand is CycleSuperStore out in Tallaght, and that tends to be mostly high end, but not always.

For your 600 quid, online is the best bet... The BeOne Storm is a bargain at just under 600, with Shimano 105 all round (there's a few people on here with BeOnes, and quality seems pretty good)

56/54, the specialized was a 56, currently riding an old 54 high end cannondale which is ever so slightly too small for me but comfortable, it however is my Gf's and if I damage it ill be killed as it's of huge sentimental value to her.

We have a 54 fixie which I find uncomfortable, it remains unused because my commute involves too many hills, plus it currently has no brakes, no so hot in the wet.

Cool thanks for that. I'm not sure the difference between the 1.0 and the 2.0 is worth the 100 pounds for me, its going to become a beat up commuter anyway so gear performance/weight isn't the top priority plus I think maybe the 1.0's brown screams steal me a bit more than the 2.0.....

The other option is those 279 specialized tricross bikes.... Maybe I'll buy em both...... I don't really need to eat this month, Ill get by........

Had the same dilema as you and the same price range and I ended up going for the Trek 1.2. Drove up to Lurgan last Saturday to this shop http://www.wheelsnmotion.co.uk/ Advantage over buying online was that they took the time to set it up for me including changing a stem (?) to suit my height. Can't say if the bike is any good though, haven't had a chance to get out on it yet, its sitting in my garage looking very very white (it's going to be a pain to keep clean).

Now driving up north isn't a bad plan, Don't know where I'd find the time though. the trek is nice, it'd need some well planned dirtying up though, I give it 5 mins anywhere in town without a 10kg lock.

I think I'm going to buy the specialized, its single speed/fixed, acts as a mild deterrent to thieves. Plus they're cheap and I like riding single speed. Pearson will ship here I believe but does anyone know how quick they are? Cause the BeOne will be here tomorrow apparently. And I am really sick of the bus.

Flip flop isn't it? Maybe not. No matter has Horizontal dropouts, can go fixed if I feel inspired although I have to admit my knees hate me after a week on a fixie.....

    I don't see it mentioned here: http://www.pearsoncycles.co.uk/product/4422/SPECIALIZED_TRICROSS_SINGLE_2008_RRP_450_SAVE_175_NOW_27499

But maybe it is? Best double check before ya commit.

    Edit: actually maybe it does...

    from that page...

"As the tricross has a flip flob hub (2 sprocket/freewheel fixings, one on each side of the hub) you can add a second size of sprocket/ freewheel to your tricross to increase its versitility, eg this smaller tooth sprocket/freewheel will make a harder gear size better suited for road use."

Yes, you just need a cog and a lockring.

That was one of the reasons I wasn't buying the thing! Cos I thought it wasn't flip-flop.....flip it anyway :p

At that price I'd prob buy it anyway. They can't have that many left, it seems like everyone who comes in here has at least thought about it. Anyone know how much Pearson will charge me for shipping? It says 8.50 but I don't believe them at all.....

£30, I was on the phone at the end of last week to check on when they would be sending out my order and asked about the P&P costs. Still waiting for my Charge Plug racer to arrive and my credit card hasn't benn billed and now the sterling rate is moving to a more unfavorable direction and the delay has cost me around €60 :(

So.... I bought both of em, turns out my dad need a new bike for his commute so I'll use the Specialized for to get to and from work/pub and steal his BeOne if I'm headed out for long ones at the weekends.

    Thanks all for the help...
