I'm an applicant to AGS, waiting on the call for Templemore start. I know i'm thinking a few years down the line but i'm really set on joining the water unit. It is one specialist unit that's hard to get any info on! Can anyone tell me more about it, is it easy / difficult to get in? What are the kind of characteristics they are looking for? Is it a unit that AGS are looking to expand in the future?

thanks, i've seen both those links, there is not a huge amount of insight to be gained from them. Scubadave, i presume you are a member yeah? is is a difficult division to get into etc... PM if ya like

I've heard it is quite difficult to get into and is very demanding. Its also quite a grim job, i.e. not all about riding around in speed boats. I've a friend who's in it in the PSNI, he says its very grim, he'd tell me he was searching climbin through a waste sewer just nig enough for a man to squeeze through looking for remains of a missing baby, with crap and rats going past him... or lakes/rivers etc for some missing child. You have to be of a certain psychological make up/mindset for that kind of work, along with years of training. I dont envy them.

You definitely wouldn't want to suffer from claustrophobia.
Just asked mate thats in it for ya... he said you should try and achieve skills in lifesaving, first aid etc, also undergo PADI and get qualified and maintain and keep qualifying in Diving skills.
Its expensive but if its what you really want it would be worth it.
Those kind of qualifications should help you greatly when you apply for GSAU as it will show that your already proficient in these areas.
Heres a few links for dive schools, (i did PADI course with oceandivers and found them very good.

You'll have to buy some of your own gear, though.

I know 1 person in it. Fit lad that had all the various swiming and life saving course and merit badges. I presume after that its a case of passing the interview.

It would be hard because its a small unit and any small unit has 100 applicants for every 1 position

Not wanting to blow smoke up your posterior, most of these jobs are 'dead-mans-shoes' type stuff. Not to say its impossible to get onto such units, but vacancies seldom arise and selection is tough with a large amount of applicants. Our MSU, marine support units, and underwater search teams are massively sought after roles, as are ASU/Dog Squad/Gun Squad and anything else Gucci.

You are awful, but I like ya ;) However, if this is your way of proposing, I'm flattered, but I doubt you'd have time for a serious relationship what with your 3 jobs :p

I looked into doing it with the Navy after getting my PADI Rescue Diver cert. (A mad idea after coming back from travelling) I decided against as I don't think I could handle recovering bodies. And it's also extremely hard to get into.

I'd suggest aiming for a Rescue Diver qualification with PADI. You learn technique of search patterns for missing divers and how to bring unconscious divers to the surface and onto the boat/shore. It's a tough course but very enjoyable. You must complete the Open Water and Advanced Diver Course, 20 dives completed and also have an up to date First Aid cert before commencing it. You could easily do these over a few summers abroad to save on money although it would probably be tougher doing it in the rough Irish Seas which will give you a better feel for the job (I'm guessing).

Hi there, probably too late... But don't Join the Garda Diver unit, the Garda full stop if you want to do something like that Join a CFT diving club and learn to dive with them.. They also provide a national Search & Recovery Service, its not paid though!!!

You clearly know nothing about the unit if your telling someone not to join it. Its a brilliant resource and in high demand when vacancies arise.
If your going to make sweeping statements like that... back them up

Purplebetty: I'm going to agree with djtechnics on this one. This is your first post on the forum, and there is no substance to your post whatsoever. What is the basis of your statement to the forum advising people not to join this unit?

And I stick by what I said. This is the wrong place to ignore a moderator. You will abide by the charter at all times, or you won't post here again.

    Decide.

You are completely over the top and are personalising this with me, you decide yourself and then let me know how I can make a complaint against a moderator, i'm sure in the interest of fairness on this thread their is an appeals/complaints procedure

No, you breached the charter by insulting another poster, however miss guided a post is we do not insult on this forum.

You were then advised by a moderator on your behaviour. You didnt take it and you challenged it. Read the forum charter. You may not challenge a moderator in a thread. You must pm them or take it to feedback.

You have been issue a warning for this, next breach will be an infraction.....

Edit: here is feedback forum- http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=82

I was told by a moderator that i was recieving a warning and that next time I would recieve an infraction but then I was given an infraction anyway, whats the story moderator

You recieved a warning...a yellow card. Not an infraction which adds an infraction point to your profile.

You are now banned for 7 days......if you cant keep to the charter....well then simply go away and dont post in our forum.

    Warmest regards
    NGA
