At what point of pushing yourself is too much?

    Hi,
I was doing a session there this evening. Did bench, military press and then squats.

I upped my weight by 5kg this evening on the squat and did three sets of 5 reps. I really was pushing hard and just about managed it but I felt physically sick afterwards and had to lie down for a half hour. I think my body temp might have been too high or something.

Will I just get used to pushing myself hard like this or did I lift too much even though my muscles were capable (just about - but I was pushing myself!)

    Thanks.

Listening to your body is key - learning and recognising the difference between being genuinely fatigued and needing a break and just a little lazy/lethargic. If you feel weird during a workout or have sensations that you don't usually get then it's probably a sign to stop. Maybe take a couple days break and then go in and again for a lighter workout and build it up from there again.

I have the flu yes. I thought I was coming out of it that evening but I've got worse since.

Guys I have to say that I am head wrecked, just getting over a stomach bug and have not been able to train since friday. Today is my first day eating properly since Sunday night and I am dying to train but I will leave it til tomorrow. I am listening to my body, I wont to go back knowing that I am 100% better. One more day wont do any harm, rather that then training tonight getting sick again and missing more time from training. Best to stay away til fully recovered.

I did another session this evening and I didn't have an awful lot of energy. I've ordered some multivitamins. I might just not be that strong after being a little sick recently.

One bigger problem I have though which I've been ignoring the last few days but can't ignore it anymore now as it's getting worse. It's to do with my stomach. It feels kind of knotted and uncomfortable and I find it hard to eat a big meal. I'm passing more gas this evening than I have been for the last two weeks also (even though I've been eating the same thing the last two weeks). I also got a pain in my intestine area earlier this evening - a sharp pain which only lasted a second. The last time I got something like this is when I got constipated but eating proper vegtables sorted that out.

I know it must have something to do with what I'm eating or how much because I've only started my new diet about two weeks ago.

    Basically what I'm eating is
    Breakfast: Corn flakes
    Break: Yougurt & 1L milk & Apple
Lunch: Beans on toast / sandwich with ham, tomatoes and lettuce
    Break: Yogurt & 1L Milk
Dinner: Spuds, Frozen veg, Chicken or Pasta with sausages and bowl of veg
Before bed: Maybe another yogurt or some crackerbread with philidelphia soft cheese

I'm eating plus 500 cals over maintenance every day. What could be causing my stomach problems?

    Thanks.

Firstly, in relation to how you felt after the workout you did in the first post, i.e. sick and had to lie down for 30 mins. Your blood sugar levels dropped too low. Symptoms are feel sick or dizzy and sometimes shakes and tremor. This is really common after pushing yourself with compound lifts like squats or deadlifts. When you feel like that, the best thing is to get some sugars into you asap (smarties, skittles, lucozade) and you'll feel fine in a couple of mins.

WRT your diet in general, have you just recently started drinking 2L milk a day? That can be tough for your body to suddenly have to deal with if you previously only used to have milk with cereal and tea/coffee etc. But, your body will naturally adapt to the increased lactose by increasing the levels of lactase, but it can take a couple of months.
