is it true that there are only 300 places for the common entry of science, and that if you get 420 points ( minimum requirement ) your not necessarily gauranteed a place?

was wondering how this works. Any help would be great!

If you get the points for a course, as long as it isn't random selection (usually designated with a *) you get in. There are place limits for every course.

And there isn't a minimum requirement for Science for points?

    Edit: http://www.tcd.ie/courses/undergraduate/az/course.php?id=82

    Minimum entry 2007 was 420.

thanks for replying mate. ok heres the deal i really like the look of Biochemistry with Immunology and i see its 420 points. It also says you must apply for the common science entry for this which i presume is general procedure. what im wondering is if i get 420 points am i 100% guaranteed to get in even though theres only 300 places?

If you get the points (and the subject requirements!) you get in. That's it.

Is it that you're worried that if you get in with 420 points that you won't get the choice of the subjects? That people who get 600 points get the first choice of the subjects?

no there is like 380 places! it all depends on demand for a place, ! but that doesnt mean you can go directly into biochem and immun, there is competition in 3rd year to gain the degree of your choice, and you have to choose certain subs for each degree option!

420 is the points for 2007. They could go up or down or stay the same. You never know.

The minimum points required for entry into general science in 2007 was 420. This means all the places were filled by people who got at least this many points. This year the points could be lower or higher depending on the amount of people who apply and they're leaving cert. results.

However the points you get in your leaving cert will not guarantee you a place in biochemistry with immunology (B with I). The points will get you into first year general science along with the 299 other students who are then all on level pegging for the 10-15 B with I places.

In second year of general science another type on CAO form organised by the college is filled out by everyone with their list of preferred subjects to specialise in in 3rd year. B with I will be one of these options. All 3rd year options have 1st and 2nd year subject requirements so if you want to do B with I you will need to have studied the required courses and achieve a grade in your 2nd year exams that is in the top 10-15 of all people applying.

Basically the leaving cert points get you into general science but from then on its up to you to do the required subjects and get a good enough grade to specialise in the subject you want.
    Hope this helps.

cheers for the help lads....sorry for being a bit of a pest but i feel like i need to ask these questions however stupid they may be lol.

''ballroom blitz'' in third year when i want to pick my specialised course is there anyway i could study the right things so that i could be eligible for B with I and B with Cell Biology. As this would possible ensure i get a place in third year in a course i want to do.

Thanks to all for the help. Its very much appreciated.

    Regards

You choose your subjects in first and second year so if you read up about the requirements for B with I you just make sure you've picked them.

I think you need chemistry and Maths in first year and biology 1 in second to be eligible but dont quote me on that.

Edit: found lots of info about the requirements for all the science courses here

just checked there now and all the biochemistry and whatevers all require the same choices so if i get into TCD please god i dont think i'll encounter too many problems choosing a specific course.

Thanks for your help. Seems like theres alot of helpful people on here lol.

300 places? Does anybody know if they increases this because back in '05 it was 248 IIRC but I may be wrong.
