This is going beyond a joke...

    Dear
    ,

Thank you for your recent application for part time typist with Brendan J McLoughlin & Co.

One of the criteria was that the successful applicant reside in the Blackrock, Booterstown, Merrion region of Dublin as the majority of the required work would be done from the applicants home which needs to be a short distance from our offices in Blackrock.

Unfortunately your location falls outside this criteria so we will not be taking your application any further.

May we take this opportunity in wishing you success in any further job applications.

    Regards,
    Mr Asshole.

Is the criteria getting so strict that people are being fobbed off? I am living in Sandyford for christ sake, 3 mins from blackrock. This is just getting out of hand.

That is a bit odd alright.

You should walk from your home to their office tonight - time yourself - and send them an e-mail with the time in it.

PS I'm from Blackrock and I agree Sandyford is very close.

    Howdy neighbour.

I sent him an E-mail and he replied with something like, "that is my clients criteria, he has a right to set demanding criteria and I must follow it". That is complete crap.

I have been getting rediculous replies like that for the past 6+ months. I am just sick of it. I am just about ready to give up on it all... Really am.

Have a look at this for a ridiculous rejection letter.

    Nice letterhead though.

That's a load of boll*x alright, but there's no way Sandyford is 3 minutes from Blackrock.

I'm pretty sure that his response is discrimination on geographical grounds...

In fact certain areas of Sandyford are less than 1 minute from Blackrock... but Sandyford Village and Blackrock Viallage are 10 - 15 mins apart. Still a very short distance...

Talking about driving here guys. Even a cycle is about 25 minutes. I am situated closer to leapordstown than any other part of sandyford, if that makes any sence?

That leter is from 1938 mate, it's not too unusual to be told no because of your gender...

Is the reply that I got discrimination? I am thinking to myself, is there not one job out there in the whole of Dublin, Wicklow, Carlow, Kilkenny area that I can do, FFS. I have thought about setting up a small business just to put food on the table, but still not 100% sure, I will have to invest all my social welfare money which I was keeping for a rainy day. If it doesn't succeed then I lose what some would consider not a lot, but would put me in a very deep dark damp hole for a very long time. Not sure what to do :( This unemployment lark is really getting the best of me.

I'd be awful if you put down your location, with Blackrock at the end, by accident  It'd get you the interview. Google the lines used in the ad, and you'll find another agency for the same job. I take it you mention you have your own transport in the letter? I ask cos if the job started before the buses started, they'd want someone who lived locally.

Why not put up a few signs in local shops, supermarkets advertising your typing services?

Sorry to hear that one, IAm, but by the sounds of it, they had someone in mind for the job already. More than likely a family member of someone working there already (and living in one of those select areas).

If it was through an agency, I would be questioning the angency guy why he put in your cv when he had his strict criteria. :(

Put it this way, at least you won't be working for some tool that only likes those from particular areas...

Good luck with the job search though!

In times like this employers get to be as picky as they like. They probably had 50 CVs for this position, of which 20 were strong candidates, 15 had a degree, 10 had previous relevant experience, and they're not going to interview 10 people for a part time typist role. It sucks for those job hunting but it's the way of things right now unfortunately :(
