Hi, I'd like to upgrade a (03) server from w2k to sbs2003, is it be possible using this hardware. Server was out of warranty in '07 but there's no money to upgrade the hardware, apart from memory and hard disks, the server has been running perfect.

    2.40 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
256 Megabytes Installed Memory 3 free slots

The current disk setup is IDE x 2 80GIG hdd.

The route im thinking of taking is fairly simple, max out the ram and install a scsi controller for two 146gig disks, in a raid 0 configuration.

Would this work ok, would dell still provide support on this server if it was needed, i.e. replacement motherboard dont mind paying for this if it happens down the line.

Max the ram out and if your on a budget get a GOOD raid SAS card and use SAS drives instead of SCSI.

If you warranty is up it up and Dell with probably charge you 4x the price of the box to extend it.
But you should be able to buy replacement bits from their part department but be prepared to buy a hefty price for the privilege.

    Edit:

Also look at the Windows 2008 Core it have cut down version what will be less taxing on the old hardware.
    Max. Memory 4GB

    Expansion 4 Sockets

2020.ie or Peats will sell you "3rd party" ram which will be a lot cheaper then getting basically the same ram with a Dell sticker on it directly from Dell.

I was hoping for 2003 SBS, would 2008 SBS be better for this old box if I was to max it out. thanks for the recommendation on the SAS card.

Would it be better to virtualise the SBS (for disaster recovery) if the box did fail.

it may be cheaper to buy SBS oem on a new box (dell ) .. do you have the licences?. are you moving to sbs 2003 because of exchange ? How many users do you have?

if so consider using "gmail for your domain" for your mail unless you fancy investing in backup hardware and lots of admin time.

Yep for the exchange Never heard of the gmail option, only got 5 - 7 users. So that looks very good and less of a head ache.
