Where abouts is it ? I see that the address is 4Exchequer St which I think is at the Georges st end of the street but where exactly is it ? I can't find it

Oh and does he buy any other gear besides guitars ? Does he buy pedals, amps etc ?

It's up above Sabotage on Exchequer St. There's a small sign, ring the buzzer and the guy will let you in. Also if you look up at the windows along there you'll see a load of guitars in his one. :)

Above Buffalo Shoes was my landmark!

It's on the left side when you're walking towards Georges St, after you get past the big pink shoe shop it's a little doorway, there might be a sign out on the path.

I'm fairly sure I saw amps and such last time I was there.

Dont want to dis him, but although a friendly guy, I wasnt happy with his effort at setting up my guitar.

He's done some great work for me. Some of it quite miraculous to be honest. Given the cost of some of the guys around town he's very reasonable too.

sorry if I'm hijacking this thread - who would you recommend for guitar set up in Dublin (pref. centre / south)
    Rocky

I've only used Euguene McLoughlin , he's on South Circular Road. He's Musician Inc's main man, I think he's got a workshop setup in Xmusic at the Red cow, not sure but anyway...

    Here - www.theguitarworkshop.net

Also, I think Musician Inc might be doing setups but they're probably still trying to harmonize both their shops atm.

Cheers Alan - any feedback on on guitarworkshop?? I think I got a quote off them ages ago and it was quite steep...
    any other recommendations from anyone??

    Thanks

Derrick Nelson out in Marlay Park. Great work and he's a nice guy. Been at it for years so he knows his stuff.

The downside is that it's a little pricey and there may be a bit of a wait but it's quality work. Any instruments I've gotten back from him have been superb. :)

As for the Guitar Workshop, I rang to get a quote for a straight forward mod and the price changed many times (not in a good way!) in the few minutes I spoke to him. I've heard some dodgy things about his work but I don't have any personal experience of it and don't wish to.

I don't think there is a "them" . It's only one guy, at least there was in the Summer of 2007 when I was last in his workshop.

He repaired the neck of Les Paul which was broken at the headstock. I think it was €300-400, can't quite remember. It depends on what you call steep really and how you value your instrument. Yer man Euguene is very professional and has tons of work. There's a chap in Marley Pk area who also does repairs and modifications. I hear he's pricey too but I've not really heard or read any negative stuff about either man's work.

I could be wrong but I think that they may be the only 2 full time professional Guitar Tech/Luthiers

I got my Tokai flying V set up in Sound Gear near Portobello bridge a few years ago. Good result and inexpensive.

Mods: please feel free to delete this post if you feel it's unfair.

A few years ago I brought a fairly inexpensive guitar to Derrick Nelson and his quote was so expensive I said no. Next day I took it to Guitar Workshop. First of all the guy there had a look at it and told me there was nothing wrong with it. Then when I showed him what was wrong he said it was because I had set it up wrong. Finally I spelled out to him exactly and specifically what what wrong with it (as shown to me the previous day by D. Nelson). Following a lot of BS he then gave me a quote which was almost as much as Nelson. I just had no confidence in him at this stage so I took it back to Derrick Nelson. He fixed it. It was expensive and took a long time but it has played fine ever since.
Maybe I caught the Guit Workshop guy on a bad day and maybe he's fine on simple stuff like setups but based on my one experience I'd rather pay for the guy who seems to know his stuff.
Obviously this is just my opinion and YMMV etc....

What was wrong with it ?

    I'm no advertisement for guitarworshop...
It was an Epiphone Les Paul and he rang me up to say it'd need so much work and cost so much that I'd be better off scraping it. But I really liked the guitar and it's a keeper so I went ahead with it. Now, I think that perhaps it's possible he was trying to disuade me from going through with the neck repair as it was "only an epiphone" (as you hear so often:p)

But still, I had a Les Paul in two pieces, it was fit for the bin and Euguene put it back together. From what I understand a LEs Paul neck that's been broken and repaired is stronger than a Les Paul neck that comes out of a factory . In fact, Ed Roman joked that Gibson should break all the Les Paul's necks and reglue then before shipping!

Ed Roman says alot of things. Someone should break his neck before shipping.

    Guitar fix is absolutely terrible.

I left my guitar with him for repair and when I came back on the day he had told to me to return to collect it, I was firstly waiting outside the building with no response for 15 minutes, this was during their "opening hours" which are clearly listed by the door. He returned saying he had gone out to get lunch.

When I went up the stairs with him to collect the guitar he asked which one it was, I told him.. He scratched his head for a minute and said "I think I forgot to fix that one". I was patient with him and he said "just let me eat this spring roll and i'll fix it for you" so I went for a cup of coffee, he was supposed to ring me. After 40 minutes with no phone call from him I decided to return back to see if he had finished.

He said "I think theres more wrong with this guitar than I thought..." He told me to return in a few days. I returned the following weekend only to face the same problem as before, no answer at the door. I tried ringing the number on the sign, no response. I had to go because I was late for rehearsal with my band so I returned again the following monday.

He still hadnt fixed the guitar! I sat waiting in the hallway while he tried different things and he eventually fixed it. I was sitting there for about 30 minutes.

I advise anyone to steer clear of this place, completely unprofessional and a huge waste of my time.

Holy crap! Thanks for the heads up on this one - I was gonna go into this guy this weekend to get a couple of guitars setup and fret-dressed. Is this the same guy who sells "vintage guitars" yeah?

If Eugene (from guitar workshop) has something goin on with X-Music I'll just drop down there instead. I'll actually check this out this weekend and post back.

Maybe it was a bit harsh of me to say everyone should steer clear of guitar fix, but my experience with him was bad enough that I wont be going there again.

I'm sure hes done some good for other people before, but I felt like I was getting messed around.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,528 ✭✭✭OK-Cancel-Apply

I'd avoid the place. The guy hardly said two words to me, and quoted me €10 for a part that costs about €1.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 34 unseenother

I had exactly the same experience as VQ_Shred.

When i expressed my unhappiness with the setup he became very disgruntled and unhelpful. Didn't end well.

Would not recommend the place based on my experience. I've heard good things about Eugene in guitar workshop but not used him.

It's a shame guitar fix didn't work for me, would of been handy to have somewhere reliable in the city centre.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,180 ✭✭✭Seziertisch

I got a Bigsby put on a guitar there a while back. The work seemed fine except for the fact that he didn't earth it (which I did myself as it was easier than taking it back).

A few months later I went somewhere else to get locking tuners put on. The guy doing the job offered to fill the holes left after the original tail piece was taken off and do a less conspicuous job of the earthing. He then contacted me to say that he was hesitant about the removing the Bigsby as the screws were very tight in the holes and he was worried that he might break one or damage a tread while trying to remove them. I said it was ok as I had already taken off the screws when I was earthing it, but I knew what he meant when he said they were too tight. Anyways, he got the Bigsby off, no screw breakages, and then redrilled the holes for the screws so that they had a bit more room.

I could have just gone to the second guy in the first place, but it would have been great to have had somewhere decent in the centre of town.

Was talkin to this guy about a gibson with a neck repair i bought a few years ago,He told me about €100 to glue the neck back on but about €200 to sand & respray the neck, seemed fair enough price !

As for guitar fix , every time i go there it's closed

The €80 sounds like pie in the sky for repairing a broken neck.

I also find it a bit odd that the only 3 posts Kford has made are relating to Guitarfix, all of them with a slightly defensive tone. I hope Kford isn't the guy from Guitarfix because to come on to boards and big up your own work anonymously would just be a bit sad.

I had two jobs done in there, one set-up on a floyd rose
    Was perfect afterwards

And a spray job later on the same guitar

Again very happy with price and result!

I am not kevin, nor would i have met him more than the 3 times i was in his shop

I just wanted to share my experience.

I also want some of the guitars he has ;)

280 I suppose sounds slightly closer to what you could be expected to pay I suppose. I paid a lot but the job was done right. I don't think I'd expect the same job for 80 though. Mind you the cost of a setup in Dublin instrument shops (especially ones with not price list on display) is pretty pricey anyway.

As I said, I would hope someone wouldn't do that. I just find the nature of Kford's posts combined with the fact that they have only made 3 posts in total and all on this thread a bit odd.

I got the lads in Musician Inc, whom I knwo well, to get my guitar set up by Eugene McLoughlin and it came back like a brand new guitar. Its (only) a 1998 Mexican Strat but it came back playing beautifully, great low action, fret dress, the lot!!

Also I have an Epiphone Les Paul Black Beauty that I bought from a mate who told me there was "nothing wrong with it", me ar$e!! When I got it, there was a crack down the neck at the first fret and a bad drop would have taken the headstock clean off. I broughtit to Tony Thompson in Arklow and he did an incredible job on it and even offered to do a re-finish on it. Couldn't have done a better job on it and he's a luthier and I've seen some of his work and its amazing.

I'd personally stay the hell away from Guitar Fix. I went in there once to check the place out - to see what kind of stock he had. Firstly - it was all WAY OVERPRICED. He was looking for two grand for a secondhand Gretsch Setzer hotrod. You could get one brand new for that if you do your research. Secondly - the guy who ran the place was rude as hell and didn't seem in the least bit interested in having anybody in his shop. Thirdly - this was my third attempt at trying to get into the place - on two previous occassions, during business hours, I got no answer. When I was in there he had the temerity to complain about business... I only went in because a friend of mine suggested I check it out. Never again. If you want a good setup done on your guitar you can check out www.hazeguitars.com Soundgear is alright too - I haven't been there in a while so I don't know who's doing the guitar setups now but if it's still Brian, you're in good hands.

Brian made an unholy balls of a Jaguar setup I dropped into him before. He called me back into the shop 3 times in total saying it was done and each time the same problem was there. Had a row with him and paid him a couple of quid just to get the guitar and get out. Gave it to Eugene McLoughlin and he sorted it within a day and it was perfect. Was a bit gutted because had heard alot of good stuff about Brian and could not believe the problems I had.

In terms of guitarfix, I got a small job done in there recently for a reasonable price and he did it when he said he would do it which was all good, he also has some very cool guitars there. However having said that it is next to impossible to catch the guy. You can call to the shop during the so called "opening hours" and you can buzz the number but it will get you nowhere fast. Either he happens to be in or he doesn't and that is a head wrecker. If he sorted this out, then based on my experience he could have a nice little business going there.

I may have mentioned this on here before but it's worth repeating. Kevin worked what could only be described as a miracle on an acoustic guitar of mine once.

He's pulled off some great day-of-gig emergency fixes for me too.

As far as I can tell, this is the guy from Guitarfix. He has changed his user name both on boards and on adverts a number of times. I don't really understand why he feels the need to big up his own business anonymously. This isn't the kind of behaviour that would inspire trust in any potential customers.
