    Hi everyone,

looking to get an idea of weddig cake makers, and was hoping some of you might have some good recommendations. It will be a small wedding - 40 max at sit down, and then about another 40 max at evening. So looking at probably a 3 tier. some of the prices I have seen are CRAZY!!! over a grand for a bit of fruit cake? and nothing special to look at!? no way

was thinking of having a mix of fruit, chocolate or something, just for a change, and make a decent dessert at the meal. A family member makes gorgeous fruit cake nad has offered, but so far most of the websites I have consulted have had little in the price of making and decorating the cake, or decorating alone.

I would appreciate a reasonably priced recommendation, with nice design, tat won't break the bank and will taste yummy. I don't really want to spend more than €400, cos I know most people aren't even that bothered with actually eating the cake! lol not to be a scab about it, but I would rather spend a couple of hundred euro elsewhere that it will be of more benefit, than on a half eaten cake!

I'm in the Dublin area, so any one with recommendations for there please step forward. I have been told that Annes Bakery in Dublin are good and reasonable - anyone able to confirm?

    many thanks,
    E

    Hi,

I got a three layer cake for about 90 people last year for just about €400 from A Piece of Cake in Tallaght. Had fruit cake, lemon cake and chocolate biscuit and people loved the choice. Very good value in comparison to alot of places.

We are getting our cake here, would highly recommend them, great value and very helpful.

both added to the list - any more suggestions out there?

bensoneb - love the sounds of the lemon cake and biscuit cake. I love lemony things, but I know not everyone does. That would be nice for the smaller tier and then I might even be able to keep it all for myself! lol

I was even thinking of just getting a smaller 'traditional' cake for 'decoration' and photos and then going to our local bakery (don't do wedding cakes unfortunately) and getting a selection of general gateaux - like a lemon merangue (theirs is to die for), a few dozen cup cakes, mille feuille etc, and getting them arranged nicely on a stand - then let the guests tuck in. Looking into it it wouldn't be that expensive - the trick will be in how its presented, but I'll leave that to the sister, she's good at those arty things! lol

"Crumbs" a guy who operates in Stamullen is very good, we got a 3 tier, had 70 to day and it was perfect. We opted away from the fruit cake though and had, choc biscuit, choc maderia and carrott. It was very reasonable. He delivers the cake and sets it all up, and comes back the next day to collect stand, so no hassle.

just my view on the cake, It is a part of the wedding that normally lasts about 30 seconds and isn't much more than a photo oportunity. Very few people care what it looks like and a homemade cake, decorated with flowers always has more people talking about it than a professional looking standard cake

as soon as you finishing cutting it, it's whisked away and sliced into pieces and is on;y seen again later in the night in slices

my wedidng we had a simple cake but decorated with fresh flower petals and put together by my now wife and her mom

Cakes and Co in blackrock did our cake and it was delicous, loads of people commented on it. Our cake was a 4 tier for 500, we had different fillings for each layer. They do have more reasonably priced ones. If you are near the area you should pop in, they are on newtownpark ave. There is also Cakebox in Dun Laoghaire although their samples tasted only ok compared to Cakes &Co but they are a bit cheaper.

We used Cakes & Co in Blackrock and they were great. We had a four tier cake with 4 different fillings. Most people aren't bothered with cake a wedding but everyone loved ours. There wasn't much left to take home!! Their chocolate biscuit and lemon madeira were especially nice!
We were originally supposed to get our cake from Cakebox in Dun Laoighaire but we had a problem with a birthday cake we bought from them. Not to go on too much but there was a hair in the birthday cake and they were downright rude when we brought it back. I would avoid them! Hope that's helpful!:D

any idea of prices? I am moe interested in the tast of the cake to be honest - I know the photo opportunity is part of it but I don't want to spend €400+ on something just to LOOK nice, I want it to bloody taste yummy too, otherwise I'd ge a box iced and just serve apple tart for dessert??

Fan Tail - what kinda price are we talking for Crumbs in stamullen? location would be great for me.

also a family friend has offered to make the cake, and she makes lovely fruit cake, but when I ask around having the cake made elsewhere isn't really making a difference to the price - its the icing you are paying for. I am seriously leaning towards a plain cream royal iced cake, no decor, and then adding flowers etc., and then getting a 'cupcake' tier, which I LOVE and it would make me smile 0 even if no one else eats them I'll have a good go!

Hi EmeraldLass, if taste is what you are looking for Cakes & Co are super. They normally have samples ready to take away but if going to Blackrock is a bit out of your way I would call them first to make sure they have samples of what you want.

Our cake was expensive, ours was a big cake, but i depends on what size cake you want. And if you feel that you want a cupcake wedding cake, then do it!! At the end of the day it is YOUR wedding and you have to please yourselves. Friends of ours were not bothered with a wedding cake but just wanted one for photos when they got married and they got their cake in Marks & Spencers. You can buy them ready iced and then just borrow a cake stand from the hotel. Works out very reasonably too! Hope this helps:D

yeah I am seriously thinking of getting a few white ones in M&S and then using flowers for the photo op part, and instead spending the money on the 'other' cake.

Just wish I had thought of that a few weeks ago when all the left over Christmas cakes were on offer! lol

I was at a wedding recently - 3 tiers marks and Spencers - then flowers and ribbon added - had that simple classy look about in, and only that I was part of the wedding party you would never have known it wasn't a EUR400 one!

Sorry meant to say they are actually wedding cakes....

thanks for that what2do - I think it will look lovely - well I'll make sure it does! lol but its nice to have someone back you up. I'm lucky in that my sis is a florist and generally arty person, and has decorated for weddings and special events all her life, so if anyone can make a plain white/cream cake look good she will. An my other sis is pretty nifty too, so I am blessed!

I know some people don't have a clue in all fairness but they think they're great, and then the cake looks crap, but I know she'll astound everyone. I don't mean to be rude about saying some people are clueless, but we all know a few don't we? lol I mean, I'm all for cutting our unnecessary expense, but if you pay €100 to M&S and it looks like total crap, you would have been better off not to have bothered! lol I'd rather not have something than have a really crap second rate version of it - but I am fast learning that with a bit of igenuity and a very useful sister you can get a good quality without paying a huge mark up. (thank god - I'm not a total tightarse, but I want wher eI spend my money to creat the most enjoyment, like the food, drink atmosphere, not just on things that are for show that are easily forgotten - an extra €100 on drink would suit me better than on a bit of sugar icing!)

EmeraldLass, if your sister is a florist, then you are sorted!!! Flowers can be expensive to get so I'm sure she will look after you! For our cake we had a layer of flowers in between each tier. The flowers matched my bouquet and it was just gorgeous. It makes the cake look a million dollars!!:D Seriously, if you are not too bothered spending lots of money on the cake, dress up something like an M&S cake and put the the rest of the money towards something else and nobody will know the difference!
