    Hi Everyone,

Sorry in advance if this seems confusing

Basically me and 3 of my friends are planning a round the world trip -

Starting by doing the East Coast of America - we have planned to travel across it but because we are going in Oct/Nov, we decided to wait till Spring when the weather is good etc. Sooo we are thinking of going to Canada [under the U35 program] for a few months [possibly Toronto] and then head off across the states starting from Chicago over to LA/San Fran

Then hopefully all going well off to Fiji and hit Australia and eventually home through thailand etc [figured it would be cheaper then coming home through america aswell. Have pondered on the thought of South America before Oz aswell - Basically just want to go around the world!

Am just wondering anyone done anything like this before?
Would you have an idea of min amount of cash needed [plan on working in Canada]
Renting a car for going across [hopefully going to take a couple months to do it]
Getting into Australia after it all - would we need to get the visas before we leave to go to america in the first place? or could we online apply while travelling?

sorry about all the questions just trying to get somewhat organised and get peoples opinions

    Thanks in advance
    K

Ill start by saying I havent actually done a round the world trip! I do plan on doing one some time in the future though. The difference would be I wouldnt take in the US or Canada. The reason I say that is because these places are very expensive compared to Asia etc. and will make your budget much bigger. As well as that flights to the US are reasonably cheap so you will always be able to travel to that end of the world. I would use the time instead to do more travelling through the more out of reach places in Asia that you probably wont get to otherwise.

    Just my 2c

Likewise. Unless you really really want to work there leave the US and Canada till you're older and richer. S.E.Asia and South America are great places to go backpacking, loads to see and do and are both pretty cheap compared to northern America.
Maybe get a RTW ticket to OZ via Aisa, stop off travel then work in Oz or NZ for a bit before moving onto S. America ?

thanks for replies...we were thinking maybe doing america and canada first while we have saved a bit of money [all of us working and trying to save at the moment ] so was thinking of doing that rather than coming home through america. coming home through Asia would be more cheaper. we all want to do the road trip across america as one of the big things

will prob go with the round the world trip alright - 7 stops i think it is..so plan is kinda...America - Canda - Fiji - Oz - then back through Asia with work in Canada for a while and hopefully work in Oz :) or could look at going to South America yet aswell... just soo much to think about

would you need to have visa's for each country we intend on going to sorted before we go?

I would say get Visas sorted before you go. You might find it hard to get jobs what with the recession and all. Last I heard even Oz was beginning to feel the pinch. If you are definatly doing the road trip through America do some serious planning before you go and try figure out costs so you can budget. You will be surprised how quick it will add up. Im slightly surprised how little emphasis you are putting on Asia (you go into a bit of detail of where you are going and then say oh and back through Asia), each to their own I suppose. :)

def going to put plenty planning into the road trip for sure.
hopefully east coast and south west etc before heading for canada

will definetly be doing more in asia - all going well hopefully get some work in australia that will give enough money coming back through asia.

do you think it would also be possible to incorporate all we are doing with a round the world ticket or book flights as we go? we are going to go speak with usit soon to go through things but as i said info well appreciated

If the trip is less than one year you'll probably get better value from a RTW ticket, otherwise I would go with one ways. attitudetravel, com have an excellent guide to the worlds budget airlines.
