BMW Commercial X5's prices at car auctions in ireland

Anyone know what sort of prices these are making at the moment with car auctions?? such as merlin
Would anyone know where i could get info re. the auction prices for past merlin car aunctions??

toying with the idea of buying one as there surely is alot of re-possessions out there

I've a mate who just paid 40K Sterling last week in an authorised BMW dealership up the north for a top end low mileage X5, and after paying just under 20K Euro in VRT, had the car landed in the south for just under 60K. The same X5 (lower spec with higher mileage), could not be got for under 90K in a BMW dealer down in the south. He saved 30K by just going across the border.

most online car auctions between here and the uk have bloody subscriptions to pay to get access to this sort of info!!

get a passenger one up the north, then commercialise it (a company called OGH will do it, either that or do it yourself) , 50 euro VRT, full spec X5 ,

I've a mate who sold an 06 one, bought at the end of 2007 through a dealer for 49K Euro, sold it for 17.5K just before Christmas because he needed the cash so badly. I wouldn't take one if I was given it for free, nice car but I just don't identify with the people who buy them. To me, people are buying them to make an income/wealth statement about themselves and I'm just not into that.

I don't buy into this Darragh - I admit that your ego is heavily involved when buying a car but to say it's a wealth statement is wrong - especially now when they are losing money hand over fist, I think they are a nice car and would happily buy one but would have to sell a car (yikes) to justify it!

I heard of an 06 being let go for 11k - seems madness but good for the buyer if he/she wants a decent car for what is now a value price. At 10-20k they are cheap imo when 06 onwards.

This was not considered an unusually low price for such a car was it? What I mean is, is there a few 08's going for similar money?

I'm thinking of getting a '05 or '06 one and commercialising it. Seems to be plenty around well under £18k.

But when you see guys selling 06's for €17.5k it makes me anyway think, forget the commercial and get a passenger for the same money!? I know you have to be lucky but maybe if you were looking for one here then one would turn up?

Where have you seen '06's selling for €17.5k?
I'd definately be interested at that price!

I have heard a story or two(reliable source) of lads picking out an SUV and thinking they have got a good deal. Then going into the bank for a loan and after explaining what the money is for the bank said well we have one here and will sell it to you for "X" less.(X being 4k+ in these cases) So I dont know If you can just walk into a bank and ask them(doubt it) have they any repossessed cars for sale but they definitely have them and Im sure there are plenty of X5's among them going very cheap.

The last time i was over in Merlin (November) there was a few X5's knocking around (05-06-07's). I remember seeing one provisionally sold for €23k. Things have changed again since then, should pick up one a lot cheaper.

I'll prob be over there this Wed, i'll keep an eye out.

Cmar - darragh29 referenced a mate who late an 06 go for 17.5k just before xmas. Hammertime was offered a low mileage 08 loaded for €32k. I heard of an 06 being sold for 11k, not sure of mileage.

All of these are passenger models which makes an 18-22k commercial look a bit pricey!

I'm only waiting to hear Harvey Norman selling them for 4999 euros and if you buy a passenger one you'll get a commercial one free!!! Seriously though, Merlin often throw in cars at knock down prices to get people talking, I've been up there bidding on cars a few times and ended up as bidder two on some of the ones sold provisionally and the next time I'm up there the same car goes through the auction, unsold from the previous auction. I think the moral of the story is don't believe all you see or hear. I've yet to see a 05commercial X5 for under 20k and I get around.

That sounds more likely THB. From what I've looked at in the republic, the cheapest decent X5's comm were around €20k. So one from the north brought down and converted would save quite a bit of money.

Eric, are you sure about the €50 VRT? The X5 would be a category 'B' Vehicle e.g. Car Derived or Jeep Derived Van

To the best of my knowledge the €50 VRT rate is for "true" commercial vehicles.

TO get Cat C you need a wheelbase over 2450mm and the GVW has to be above 2520kg.
The X5 meets both of these.

Does the load area length not need to be a minimum percentage of the wheelbase to qualify for Cat C?

Can anyone confirm what VRT they have paid on an X5?

I sold a RR sport Commercial a few months back and that was €50 VRT so i presume the X5 will be the same.

Incidentally, I bought my X5 at the beginning of 2008. Brand new out of the north. Commercial so €50 VRT, paid in the VRT office in Monaghan. No vat, as the goods were for export and I am vat registered. I got the higher band of the exchange rate from my bank manager so I saved a few quid there. All in all, I got a brand new X5 for about €53k. Put seats in, pay vat and vrt, cost would have become about €110k!!!

Obiviously I couldnt predict what happen to the economy, but all in all, I still think that I got a great deal and Im very happy with my X5.

Is your attitude to these drivers (modded cars & 2nd hand luxury) not the same as Darragh29's attitude to X5 drivers? You have contempt for them because you believe that their choice of car is a failed attempt at elevating their status.

And if you're really not concerned about how other people see you then why would you resent Darragh29's comments?

I think he was using it as an example of how people although they might not be into/understand others personal tastes or wishes that we should all respect them.

I actually have first hand experience of this. I heard about it from a neighbour a few months ago (was looking for a loan for a commercial van, and the bank wouldn't give him a penny, but had a huge list of vans at 1/3 of list price for cash. Take your pick), and told my brother over the xmas (4th child on the way so legally needs a 7-seater). He called up his bank manager and asked whats the story; same answer, heres a list of cars, take your pick. roughly 20%+ discount on cheapest carzone price.
Another fella told me just yesterday at work that he went to the bank after finding a nearly new top of the range Passat for 27k and wanted a small loan. He was given one for 22k.

my advise: call you're local bank and ask. Cheaper than the UK far as I can see

Why must garages be ****ting themselves? Those, with a few exceptions, are trade prices for those cars anyway, a garage could choose to sell cars traded in, to customers as trade cars, for those prices without warranty sold as seen if they wanted. And that's what you get when you buy at auction ... it's a whole different thing to buy a car and expect a warranty, and a check before it goes on the road, or if you have a part exchange. Plus, some of those cars could eventually sell for more anyway.

As poster pointed out, who knows whether they were sold at these prices ? Provisional sale = reserve not met. Watch how many are back in next Wednesday.

Most of the buyers at Merlin are trade (apart from the cheapie cars) ... if the prices are low (and the cars are sold to them) then they have more potential margin, so why would they be worried ?

Very easy to buy a piece of c**p at auction ... I budget for approx 300-400 euro of "problems" on any car from auction, plus 1 in 10 being a piece of c**p even after checking. Spread over enough units the risk is acceptable. On a single purchase (eg for a private buyer), if the one you buy is the 1 in 10 then you are definitely not saving !
