suggestion for small blues valve amp

Im looking for recommendations for a decent blues practice amp. recently got a fender strat deluxe and im sick of playing it through a rubbish 10w marshall practice amp.

I was looking at the fender blues deluxe:

    http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/fender-blues-deluxe/67799

The only problem is in this economic climate 560 quid is a bit out of the question.

so, i need some recommendations for something that will give a good bluesy tone, is valve, but wont suck my credit card dry.

Ive had a look at some of the peavey's ( classic 30) and although not bad, they just dont do it for me. duno why.

so, if you have used anything that you might recommend for a good bluesy tone, is small enough for use in a bedroom and is not too expensive id appreciate it.

    Thanks.

You wont realise how far behind the quality of the valve king is untill you play even slightly higher end peavey amps.

Are higher end maps in the budget and suitable for bedroom use though?

    Thanks.

If you want valve amp almost all of them don't have a headphone jack, and thus will be loud in a bedroom even the smallest ones. Also theres a difference between something like a clean, fender sound and a more overdriven bluesbreakers type of sound.

    Epiphone Valve junior
    Orange Tiny Terror
    Fender Champ 600

YouTube is great for checking out amps/tone etc.

I got my triple xxx with upgraded tubes, for €525 and it is great for bedroom use.
Unlike a lot of other tube amps i've played, it sounds great at low levels as well as high.

AFAIK the valveking goes for about €444?
Much better deal going for the slightly dearer one.

Buying second hand is always great.

+1 here too. I bought one of the very first ones. I would never part with this amp. It is also way louder than you would think for an amp this size. I use it both for home playing and gigging. I play predominately Blues using a 64 Strat with Kinmans AVn Blues PUs and this amp is killer in this department.
I picked up a small box that lets me select either amp or headphones that fits neatly between the amp output and speaker jack. Over the years I have changed the speaker for a webber Jensen 12N and ordered a set of custom tubes for JJ which so help reduce the amps only flaw I have in that the reverb was a little noisy. I cannot recommend this amp enough. It is reliable and just gets sweeter with age. I see quite a few of these on ebay secondhand, asking price from as low as 250$ to $400. If you go this route try to get a first generation as the 2nd versions used a different PCB and wiring layout which IMO does not sound as good.

went to xmusic today to try a few amps. played:

    fender vibroverb.
    fender reverb deluxe.
    fender blues jr pro.
    Peavey Classic 30
    Peavey 5watt valveking.
    Laney LC 15.

Maby its just me, and i was disoriented by listening to a lot of amps, but i couldnt find one that i could get the required tone. Unfortunately i dont know what tone im looking for, but i didnt like anything i heard except the Laney LC 15.

Do you have to turn these amps up a decent amount to get the best out of them? I was playing at 1-2 as they were pretty loud even at that.

the fender deluxe reverb and peavey classic 30 were not bad also, but i couldnt easily find a tone that i liked.

hours spent researching, and im no nearer to knowing what i want!

    anyone got any advice?

I think you need to crank them. Use a attentator.

Its a black art getting a tone you like.

an attenuator, how would you attach that to an amp? wouldnt it have to be built in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 386 ✭✭davylee

    +1 on that

It usually a seperate unit. Though some amps have them built in.

Can someone please tell me the difference between:

    Fender Blues Junior
    Fender Pro Junior

I've heard good things about both, particularly the Blues, but is it worth the €90 more than the Pro, which I would have to pay with GAK.co.uk?

I think the main differences are that the Pro Jr has a 10" speaker and the Blues Jr has a 12" speaker. Also the Blues Jr has built-in reverb, and bass/mid/treb tone controls, and separate volume/master controls so you can get a distorted tone at low volume, the Pro Jr does not.

Id recommend paying the extra for the Blues Jr :)

But then I can get an orange Tiny Terror for another 30 quid.
And I've heard terrific reviews on that amp!

    I'm so confused!!!

For blues I'd go for the Blues Junior. The hint is in the name ;)
