Is that not the most ****ed up thing you have ever heard?

    .........................................................

    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20090110/tuk-mccann-anger-over-tory-fancy-dress-6323e80.html

A leading Tory youth activist has been condemned by Kate and Gerry McCann after dressing up as their missing daughter Madeleine at a New Year's party.

Conservative Future (CF) member Matthew Lewis was criticised by the family after bragging about the stunt on his Facebook site.

He was expelled from the party and criticised by Conservative chairman Caroline Spelman when his comments were picked up. Later he issued a statement to the media apologising "unreservedly" to the McCanns.
"I completely regret my behaviour that night and since, and cannot express how sorry I am for the incredible hurt I have caused," he said. "Whilst my actions were not meant to be malicious, I fully understand the pain they have brought."

Mr Lewis attracted criticism after writing on Facebook that his Madeleine McCann costume had included a blonde wig, "pink pyjamas, a teddy bear and a vial of fake blood". Other figures from Conservative Future joined in the joke, with one responding: "Is this a cunning (Baldrick style) plan to obtain the reward money?"

Ms Spelman branded Mr Lewis's behaviour "totally unacceptable" and confirmed he had been expelled from the party. "This offensive behaviour is not only shocking but intolerable and completely unacceptable," she said. "There is no place for this sort of person in the party."
The party is also understood to be examining whether action should be taken against other CF members involved. Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for the McCanns, earlier called for Mr Lewis to issue a public and private apology to the family.

"The offensiveness of this activist's actions is almost beyond belief," he said.
"I know Gerry and Kate will be grateful that the Tory party has taken swift and appropriate action by ejecting him from the party. His actions are not only disgraceful in themselves, they will also cause great hurt to Kate and Gerry. I feel it is appropriate that he now apologises both privately and publicly to them. It is a complete disgrace that Madeleine's name and image should be made fun of in this way."

Mr Lewis - believed to be in his early 20s and a student at Queen Mary, University of London - resigned as chairman of Staffordshire CF last month in protest at internal reforms. Images on the group's website show him campaigning with David Cameron for last year's Crewe and Nantwich by-election.

Wow, a guy who has created his very own, and up to now, an entirely unimagined Psychological disorder. What an utter Twat.

I think it's ironic that you're saying it's sick considering your sig offers your baby free to whoever wants it :P

There was a guy in Mayo who dressed up as her when the story was actually news. Wore a blue jersey (whatever she was wearing in the main news photo) with maddy written on the back.

    I wasn't there but I've seen photos. I laughed.

he was expelled from the CF?

Anyone else think it was just the Conservatives looking for votes and not actually giving a damn about Maddie?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,119 ✭✭✭Wagon

I don't find it sick at all. Thousands of kids go missing every day and we never hear about those incidents. But I got absolutely sick to death of the constant updates on Madeline investigations and the media circus that went with it. Taking the piss out of it is normal for something that gets that much coverage.

To be honest, nothing but good things came out of it for this chap. He was expelled from a political party. Had he stayed on, then god forbid he might have become a proper politician and lost his sense of humor and became another lick arse. Another soul saved :)

So we're only allowed joke about things that haven't actually happened, is that the rule? Would you be as offended if someone went dressed as hitler?

Was at a massive fancy dress party a year ago where the theme was "Blast from the Past". One of the lads dressed up as Maddie. He was slightly worried that someone would take offense but surprisingly everyone thought it was hilarious, free drinks for him all night. Guess it depends on your sense of humour?

If someone dressed as hitler it wouldnt bother me as enough time has passed

If it was the lindenberg baby it wouldnt either as it was nearly 100 years ago(well it will be in 2032 lol)

So we're only allowed joke about things that have happened if enough time has passed. Right so, what's the cut off point between ok and sick?

SO there is an arbitrary amount of time allowed to pass before something becomes funny?
    Like AIDS?

Are we using the 22.3 years time scale? How long does it take to be funny?

So just out of curiosity how long is "enough" time to elapse before something should be allowed to be considered for joke material ?

And to the topic in question, the costume would not have bothered me, no more than anyone dressing up in any other "politically incorrect" costume

Twenty-two point three years. That's how long it takes for something tragic to become funny.

Edit: Damn you whoever got that in before me!

No it's not it's about whether a joke is funny or sick. How would you like it if, for example, you lost your job because someone in your office took offence to your sig because their baby died or something?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 726 ✭✭✭abi2007

My sig has nothing in it about babies dying!

    Untwist thy knickers.

It's a reference to South Park when they are arguiing over when enough time passes to let AIDS become funny.

big ass? ah you have obviously read my personal ad:D

you need to take a chill pill man, i never said anything about princess DI or 9/11 or aids, im talking about people making fun of a missing child that could still be alive

I know you're not the person i was arguing with first, i'm just trying to work out when it's ok to joke about something. South park says 22.3 years, you say 50. But who's right?

Or maybe it's that everyone has their own sense of humour and there is no set rule as to what's funny and what's not

My opinion about the guy dressing up as madeline is that it is sick.. I'm ENTITLED to that no matter what my sig says.

Ah but we'll never know how many people Maddie has killed.
Her parents had to get rid of her to stop the carnage.

    And how is it sick?

its sick because a full grown man dressing up as a child is weird enough, but he is dressing up as a child who is missing , and the fact he was in a high profile job just makes him look even more of a spastic.

We know you never mentioned those things, he's making the point that what you get offended by isn't necessarily what other people get offended by and if you made a 9/11 joke half the room might laugh and the other half might hate you forever.

Basically it's impossible to make one rule that covers what's funny and what's not

i worked in a nightclub in tenerife all summer and we'd always have groups of lads in different costumes comin in.seen two laads dressed as maddie.one had an everton jersey with maddie on the back, blonde wig, suspenders and high heels.everyone found it hilarious to be honest.the other guy had a morocco jersey with mccann on the back-obviously thats where he thinks she was taken.seen a couple tshirts too with stuff like "i have maddie" and "i know where maddie is" printed on them.shes long gone at this stage so no one had a problem with it.

Yes you're entitled to say that of course you are. But equally people are entitled to get offended by it. And he's entitled to dress up as madeline and people are entitled to get offended by it. That doesn't mean that getting offended and calling it sick is right, just that they're entitled to say it
