Hate my office job

Im a first year trainee accountant (cap 1) and in the job now 6 months. I am working for a chartered practice and absolutely hate it. I have signed my 3.5 year contract but really dont feel now that I can not possibly go on with this for the following reasons:
    • The work is so boring and repetitive and no way interesting I have a very low boredem threshold.
    • Hate sitting in an office alll day long it has me fatigued.
    • The atmosphere in the office is a little cold and unfriendly I cannot fit in here I am a people person.
    • Cannot cope with going to lectures at the weekend having been working with accounts all week long. Its torture and dont think I could do this for the next 3 years, can never focus on studying as I have no interest in learning this stuff.
    • I find the work confusing and tedious.
    • cannot adapt to the corporate culture.
    • I wake up every single day dreading going to work and count the minutes until I can go home.
My previous jobs involved a more hands on role working as a team and was more people focused and target driven. Im on 2 minds as to what to do and this is torturing me inside. People are advising me on on hand to stay and get the qualification that I'd be mad in the head to leave such a good job in this economic climate and that once finished I can do so much with the qualification. Others are telling me to get out that life is just too short for being so unhappy and its not worth that and putting myself through another years of misery.

So my question is - Do I stay put because this way im making the best use of my degree and because accouting is a safe bet in the resession? or should I leave and do something else? How do I go about getting out of this contract in the best possible way?

you made a list of why you dont like your job, make one of why you do like it

also you mentioned your last job that you liked, why did you leave it?

I find myself sometimes looking back on my old jobs tending to forgetting the bad points.

There is no right thing to do and no real way of knowing which decision will end up being the better one. You just have to decide. If something else interests you, whether it's a different kind of job or travel or what have you then it might be an idea to examine your options some more while still making a bit of money. Just don't keep putting things off forever.
Personally I would say if you hate it and see no future for yourself in it then your kidding yourself by keeping it on. That isn't factoring in the economy though, or what might become of you if you do drop the job.
    Best of luck.

I'm not an accountant, so I don't have an insiders perspective on your situation.

If you're new to the working world (ie recent-ish) grad, you didn't specify if this was the case, adjusting to the 'grown-up jobs' (sorry, I'm tired, can't think of a less patronising phraseology) can be difficult.

Maybe it's the people that are the big problem. I work in IT, and the people and culture you work with can make a huge difference. Perhaps working in a different company might be the answer.

Maybe you're just not ready to concentrate on your career at this moment in time for some reason. ie you want to have fun/craic/meet people, not boost your salary.

I knew someone who quit an accounting training contract at a similar stage to you. They went and did primary school training instead. Ended up being miserable in that too, because the problem lay with their attitude to work, no the work itself.

Accounting seems very broad. There's lots of variety in workplaces. If I were you, I'd change job, but not career. In my experience, discovering the right career/job could take you 10 years. Learn your lessons from this experience, and go work somewhere else.
