The only offer I'll be buying off them will happen when they fix their stupid currency conversion rate.

Isn't there a big thread in here about how they fixed their currency conversion rates.

Is everything from Play being delivered with a value over €22 being targeted by customs?
Cheapest place on t'internet for Shaun White on the Wii €25.49, but not if I am going to get a bill from An Post for VAT and processing charge.

It's €23.49 now. I ordered it as I'm willing to take a chance on the revenue getting it.

And even if it was caught, it would still end up cheaper than buying it some places locally - it was priced at €54.99 in Tesco today.

customs shouldn't have anything to do with play.com deliveries since they are shipped from within the EU

Shipped from Jersey which isnt in the EU

Was thinking that... Which means the price quoted on their website is the price you pay. No chance of "getting caught"...

Nope, Jersey and there is a thread in Buying Online about Play and VAT/Duty which is why I asked. It wouldn't be an issue if their exchange rate was current as it is priced at £17.99.

Read the post above, Jersey is a "Crown Dependency" of the U.K., it is neither part of the U.K. or the E.U.

As said above Play ship from Jersey which IS NOT IN THE EU so there is the possibility of having to pay something to customs on anything over €22.

I've never had any problems tho & I've ordered a few expensive boxsets from them :D Just got the Star Trek Boxset in the last week & that was a big box & no problem with customs

It's all up in the air really.
They have a lot of EU aspects - any EU citizen can work there without a permit etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,026 ✭✭✭✭adox

Its not up in the air at all with regard to imports.

As far as customs are concerned Jersey is not in the EU so there is a chance you will be hit on anything over €22. To say otherwise is misleading people.

Nothing "up in the air" about it. They are not part of the E.U. or the U.K. full stop. The fact that they will cherry pick those parts of legislation that suits them is neither here nor there.
I suggest you take a flight to Jersey and buy a grand's worth of goods. On your way back through Dublin Airport declare it to the friendly Customs and Excise officer and say "sure they're almost like us" and see where it gets you.:)

still 2-5 euro of current exchange rate on some items.

until they bring back being allowed to buy in sterling i'm still boycotting them.

Can anyne confirm, if customs do request payment of VAT & their admin fee, do they only calculate on the amount above €22 or on the whole amount. Would seem unfair if someone importing €23 worth would have to pay €23 * 21.5% VAT when an item worth €22 wouldn't attrach any VAT.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,713 ✭✭✭branners69

Is it just me or are the Blu Rays a bit pricey?

Play have 2 for €35, dont Xtravision have 2 for €30?

Can't see that happening ever ,hmv are probably the closest site to play business wise and they charge 2.50 for delivery.

I wouldn't worry about customs, been ordering off play for years, most games over €22 & never had an issue, most recent order was rock band instrument only €83 arrived xmas eve by courier, no customs charges.

If you get hit by customs with play orders id consider it extremely unlucky & a rariety

I have just received a request for 30euro customs duty on 2 Band of Brothers BluRay box sets, which were 50 euro each on play. (15 euro duty EACH)

HMV are selling this same set for 35euro.

I was planning to return the sets to play, but now I don't know if I can, as in order to return them, I'll have to pay the duty!! What a catch 22!!!

just wondering if this is VAT u are being charged. I remember changes to customs levels were due to take place in december and googled the following from the irish times:
Internet shopping also gets a boost, with an increase in the customs duty threshold for "negligible value" goods imported by post from €22 to €150. However, a €22 threshold still applies to VAT, according to the Revenue Commissioners.

Well if it is they are all way out. Looking at a tv today and the Sterling price was £529 and the euro was €688 that is an exchange rate of 77p to the euro. That is a rip off when the exchange rate today is around the 91p mark.

I know it won't make much of a difference but I'm refusing to buy anything off sites like that with that much of a difference in exchange rates. That is one extra tv they are going to have in their warehouse.

Or is it do with Play shipping from Jersey. Which is not in the EU, so VAT would need to be paid. Could be wrong though.

Presumably if you refuse to pay then they are obligated to return them to Play.

they always do sales like this, the 80% is not off their normal prices, it's off a mythical UK RRP that not even the priciest of shops charges anymore

Been meaning to say thanks for some time now for the excellent heads-up a contributor in the BA section gave before Christmas on a tremendous deal for some PS3 games available at the time at play.com
Not being too well up on games but as a result of the mention, I got the game "Pure" at a knock down price - c €14 v €50+ locally! The little lad has got fantastic entertainment out of it since. And me too, especially as it was such a bargain.
I can't remember who highlighted the good deal but a big thank you. :)

Play.com are by a large margin the biggest UK online CD/DVD/Games retailer, excluding Amazon.co.uk who would be the only site whose revenue could possibly close.
If anyone's going under, it clearly isn't going to be Play.com.

As another poster said, they do these sales about every two months, just under different guises. It certainly isn't an 80% off everything (or much at all) sale and you'd have known that if you'd have taken half a look.
    Recession paranoia strikes again.

You could always try the old BT2 postcode.

Haven't tried it on play.com , but it has worked for sites that only deliver to UK addresses.
