    As the title suggests...

I'll start. I play an Epiphone Les Paul, and I love it, except for when I'm messing around quietly, because where I pick is right above the Neck pick-up, and the pick always touches off it, grand with some volume from the amp, covers it up, but when I'm playing quietly because others are around or something it drives me crazy.

    What about everyone else?

Fender Am std strat. I love it!!.Though i would like to be able to get a more gain out of it. But i love the typical strat tone, and i realize if i want something heavier than i need to get a les paul or something similiar. So it's hardly a complaint :D.

Also, i wish the bridge pickup was a little more usable. It sounds exactly how a strat bridge should sound, but i'd love to replace it with something which is closer to a tele bridge pickup. More versatile.

if that is buzzing when playing an open string? sounds like a badly cut nut
if it's when the first fret is fretted then it sounds like it needs a little work over with a fret file

    nothing with my mia jazz..
    nothing with my epi dot...

My MIM Strats volume pot knob is totally non functional

actually my acoustic, its in bits, love it so hard, but i want a mic on it.

I hate that for some strange reason I can't pull off any pinches like I could before on my ibanez and the severe lack of sustain is p1ssing me off !

After a big clearout this year Im down to three guitars - Bacchus Duke, Gibson ES333, (which unfortunately has to go to fund = ) Hamer Artist. The only thing that really annoys me is that I aint master of them, three lovely guitars but its my own shortcomings as a player that annoys me. I suppose its a case of a bad workman not blaming his tools for once.
Ive had plenty of guitars over the years with little niggles that annoyed me (like Strat bridge's for example as mentioned by Spoonbadger) but with those three its my playing that gets to me, the guitars are faultless:o

I get some awful hissing off my Ibanez SR1005, but I believe this is down to the pickups themselves. May consider replacing the pickups when I get cash.

or the whole electrics, maybe even adding some shielding to wiring will help

unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about electrics at all  a friend is gonna rewire a broken Squier I have lying around, so I'll ask him about it. Thanks for the tip!

The sandberg logo on my bass is really plasticy and tack basically, bright chrome writing on headstock. other than that, the fact that it whoops my a$$ and not the other way around......yet

My secondry strat is pretty heavy, and after a long show it can hurt my back a bit, other than that, i love my guitars! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,034 ✭✭✭rcaz

The low E saddle on my Jazzmaster, when I set it flat, it's fine, then after a bit of playing the screws start to move down, it'll start buzzing, and the string'll eventually jump out of the saddle. Kinda have to reset the bridge every few sessions. I need some loctite...

FWIW On one of my strats the second tone knob controls the bridge pickup. This IMHO does make it a lot more useable. Apparently its just a matter of desoldering one wire from the 5-way switch and soldering it to a different lug on the switch. Diagrams abound on Google if you're interested.

yeah its just when the 1st is fretted....its doing the same on my Ibanez too....

ok me being the laziest person in the world and having never attempted any home repairs on guitars is doing what you suggested as easy as it sounds.... is it just a case of getting a fret file and giving it a small going over?

IMHO you'd need to know what your doing.

My Fender Precision Lyte has a bit of a hum thats wrecking my head recently, must sort it out!

But the only non-fixable thing really is have to replace the batteries on it....

Hehe, yup. Mine has the same setup already :).

It's not that i think it's too harsh, but i just think strat standard bridge pups are kinda thin sounding in general. I might get a brass baseplate for it though, see how that sounds.

You should replace it with a mustang bridge. Alot of jag/jazz players replace the bridge, the standard ones are just too awkward.

How heavy is really "pretty heavy"?

My main bass is 11.5lbs with two of my other ones coming in at 11lbs each.

My G&L weighs in around the same. Does n't bother me too much with a wide strap.

No gripes with my gear really, unless you count that i feel wierd playing my musicman just cause its a 4 string and im so used to playing 5's.

I don't like the gloss finish on my bass at present. But this will be rectified in due course. Also, I think I want new knobs, I changed my mind about the chrome ones.

I'm the same as yourself. I'm happy with what I have, but if the finances allowed, I'd upgrade.

    You can lower the pickup.

I detest the older style TOM bridges on Epiphones. The retaining wire always comes loose and then your intonation is old the bleedin window. I've a Sheraton at the minute and the retaining wire is buzzing.
    I hate this.

I had this problem on my Les Paul. I got a Tonepros AVR-2 which sorted it out. It looks like the original, even has a fake wire. No buzzing or anything and the saddles stay in place! Sounds good too!

    I got it from darrenriley.com

As much as I love my guitar (a Gretsch Tennessee Rose), I hate changing the strings on it. The Bigsby and my fingers just don't get on and I spend most of my time cursing and trying to get the little brass ring at the end of the string to stay on its hook on the Bigsby.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

John, buy a set of foam earplugs. When you put the brass ring onto the hook, wedge the earplug under it to keep the string fixed in place. No fuss, no muss and no scratches. It took about two minutes of restringing the new Tele to figure out trying to do it all while keeping one hand holding the string on was never going to work.

If something annoys me on a guitar there are two questions to be asked.

    1. Can I fix this?

This is why knowing basic guitar maintenance is as important as knocing how to tune, IMO. However, if the answer is no, I move on to question 2

    2. How much will it cost to fix this?

If this figure is prohibitively expensive or if it is a feature of the guitar that cannot be changed, it gets sold. Life is too short to put up with guitars which annoy you when there are so many annoyance-free ones out there waiting to be picked up.

I've bought a Tone Pros bridge before, put one on an Epi Les Paul. The guitar is a Sheraton. A Tone Pros bridge might be a bit too much for my needs. I don't really need a locking bridge but I do want to get something that doesn't haev a bloody retaining wire!

The pissy part is that I paid for a set of Graph Tech saddles to go on it (it's got a bigsby installed) and I don't know if they'll fit a replacement bridge. Them Graph Tech products are designed to within very small measurements.

I didn't really need the locking part either, but it works well as a subsitute for the ABR without the buzzy retainer wire. It looks almost identical (save for the set screws in the side). :)

I might look into getting a Gotoh bridge or something...

Buying new stuff isn't really on the cards atm though but I need this bloody buzzing noise sorted, it's rotten.
