Sky Card Reregistration

Hi, need to pick some of your brains. I recently bought a second hand sky box and deactivated card with the purpose of using it to receive Setanta.
All went well and I have Setanta up and running.

I have been told that Sky are due to change cards later this year. As a result, I need to re-register the card in my own name. I would be grateful if someone who has done this could advise what info I need to provide sky with in order to have my own name/address associated with the card? I have the previous owners name and address. Is that sufficient.

As I am not a sky customer, they may not be as interested in helping me out so I want to make sure I am in a position to supply them with all the necessary details.

@tony: Do you have any idea when the card change is due to take place? Also, whats the purpose of it?

    You were misinformed.

You cannot re-register a sky card, cards are issued to the person that subscribed originally only. The name on the account cannot be changed.

If you wish to subscribe to Setanta, you would need to contact them directly and order a new viewing card from them when you subscribe.

I am unaware of any plans to "change" the cards.

According to this thread on Digital Spy:

    April
There has been notification from Sky to channels that the “House” viewing cards will be replaced in a complete Card Changeover programme beginning April 09. More when I get it

April is the only time I heard mentioned alright. What is the purpose of the swap-out?

Are we sure about that? Doesn't sound very fair to me..

I made four attempts at getting a viewing card off Setanta (I know its within their capabilities but they don't ordinarly do it for Satellite customers ...for uk freeview yes - but not for Satellite) and each of the four drones denied it was even possible.
In any case, I have a working Setanta Sub via a second hand box and a sky card that they activated that is not registered in my name. Just concerned what happens to my sub in April...>??

    1. Security usually. It's only the 3rd card in 10years. Much less often than Analogue era
    2. very normal and reasonable. New name = new contract. Change of address and same name possible. Unless you are the same person that has changed name (marriage, deed poll, professional reasons, sex change) why would ANY company let you change the name on someone else's contract?

    3. What do you do if the card was eaten by a dog, never mind Sky Swapout? I knew a dog that ate lightbulbs, chewed a phone (drool was still dripping out days later, though it worked), beer cans (full preferred), a settee & etc. Fortunately it didn't live in my house.

Was assuming there would be security element involved seeing as they are going to the trouble and expense but just wondered if there was any other reason related to additions to their service in some way.

Well, they're out of contract - although I clearly see that theres no major incentive in cooperating - unless of course they see some potential in someone having a sky box in their house - giving them the option to switch to sky on impulse....but then i suppose they could just send them a new card for this.

Well no mutt in the house and whilst I accept that **** happens, its unlikely to happen in this instance!

I guess the major frustration is Setanta refusing to supply a card. Is there some saving for them because from a customer point of view, I can't see how it could be such a big overhead. They are disenfranchising potential customers (I have never been a sky customer and as it stands have no compulsion to be). One of Setantas call centre people actually told me that I had to have an ACTIVE Sky Sub before I could subscribe to Setanta Sports!!

Yes they send a new card. There is no difficulty in it when you subscribe even with an existing box.

Also if card lost or damaged they send a new card. To name & address on the contract.

Frustrating when Setanta can't issue paying customers with cards though!

So if Sky are replacing the old yellow house cards, what does that mean for us folks with the FTV version of these cards? Will they cease to work and only leave us with the FTA channels viewable without a card?

Most probably. Though hopefully Five (Sky EPG version) and its sister channels will be FTA by then, which only leaves Sky 3 (no great loss IMO).
