I got NAT1 on the PS3 other day by connecting to the router direct through login into it and now I cant detect my laptop in devices to stream movies... anyone know how to have both at same time or do I have to go back to connecting through router homepage?

    Cheers

You seem surprised. Please read the stickies in this forum. All your questions are answered, whatever they are.

This question has been asked many times and a quick search would have given you many answers.

Apologies for my harshness, but a lot of us hear dislike lazy people [answering the same question 5 times a day].

In a nutshell, you want to set your PS3 to be a NAT 2 connection. NAT 1 is outside your network and internet facing.

Why did you choose NAT 1 in the first place? It's ONLY good for online gaming but you lose sooooo much functionality in other stuff, as you have noticed.

I know about the whole NAT2 thing I just thought everyone wanted NAT1 because thats the best?

What I was looking for was having NAT1 and using media servers...
So which one do I do??

It doesn't matter, both will work, and conversly, people have had trouble getting either method to work. In general, method 2 is simpler and involves no router knowledge, so a lot of people go for it. On the other hand, method 1 exposes less of your PS3 to the internet (just the ports you open), so its argueably a better option from a security point of view. Also, if you use media servers to stream to the PS3, method 2 will also probably stop this working - it can be made work, but thats another story....

You say theres an answer in the stickys but their wasnt... hence my question...

Bet's on you are on an eircom router 3347nwg or similarily old. Newest ones have PS3 compatibility (supposedly). You cannot get NAT2 on the 3347NWG no matter how many ports you forward so NAT1 is best to work online without problems. But, NAT1 is connecting the same way your router is connecting, i.e. directly to the net. NAT1 is not on your network and therefore you cannot use the media server and nothing on your network can see the PS3.

To use media server you need NAT2 or NAT3. NAT3 is easy on eircom router but is a pain in the hole for online gaming. As stated already, NAT2 is impossible on older eircom routers.

    You have the following choices.

    1. Get the new eircom router 2247 with latest firmware. Connect via NAT2.

    2. Get a different make of router and use port forwarding to get NAT2. Most people here appear to be using there PS3 in the DMZ of the new router. I am unsure if the PS3 is on your network to be accessed by your PC's when it sits in the DMZ. Can someone confirm that.

    3. Give up on NAT2 and stick to NAT1.

    4. Give up online gaming and connect via NAT3 to get media server functionality.

    Good luck
